Beware Trump’s Talk of Coming “Emergencies”
Far-right rhetoric is suffused with dark talk of impending calamities. It’s a favorite trope of autocrats who are, themselves, the calamity.

This has always been the GOP's strategy:

1) Cut taxes for the wealthy & corporations by claiming they'll pay for themselves.

2) Explode the deficit.

3) Demand cuts to vital programs that help millions.

4) Repeat.

They're trying to get away with it again.

I agree with Speaker Johnson.

No one should wonder whether a lawmaker is advancing their own financial interest or the public interest.

It makes no sense for lawmakers to own individual stocks. Just ban it.

Members of Congress shouldn't even have the appearance of conflicts.

60% of American households can’t afford a minimal quality of life.

Meanwhile, the 19 richest households saw their wealth increase by $1 trillion in 2024 — the biggest one-year increase ever.

Our problem isn't a lack of resources.

Our problem is ever-expanding inequality.

Translation:

1) Contrary to what this administration has been saying, countries aren't dying to negotiate deals with the US.

2) Instead, Trump will dictate how much US consumers and companies will pay to import goods from other countries.

3) It's absurd.

To make matters worse, importers are leaving inventory in China ports. Waiting for tariffs to be lowered. If they are lowered enough, there will be a crush to ship them here and transport them when they get here. That will drive transportation costs way up. = More inflation, post tariffs
That means empty shelves, an economic slowdown, and layoffs, actually.

So Trump finally reaches the concepts of the framework of a trade deal with a country that we actually have a trade SURPLUS with. In Trump’s vernacular, WE have been ripping THEM off. So now we help them reverse that so we can run a deficit with them. Brilliant.

Not to be too pro technocrat, but it is astounding how much this country depended on the selflessness of like a few hundred thousand highly educated public servants who, for peanuts, made sure our food and medicine and environment etc were safe. And in return these servants were demonized.

DOGE initially promised to save taxpayers $2 trillion.

Now it admits it's only delivered $160B in cuts.

And even those minimal savings are nearly wiped out by the cost of implementing DOGE's cuts: $135B.
