I have been trying to get this published as an op-ed, but I am going to post it here since I think it is timely in light of the "consent" extortion events.

Thrilled that someone finally made a documentary about the rail trail movement that treats that history for what it is: a fascinating and shockingly controversial story about the right to public space, which is every bit as epic as the battle against the highway movement (which sometimes overlaps).
The Shocking Untold History of America's Rails-to-Trails Movement — Streetsblog USA
Some of the fiercest battles for the future of public space in America have happened on abandoned railway corridors — and the battles aren't over yet.

two weird language developments in the US -- the takedown of the government's plain language guidance website, and NSFs proscription against first person pronouns in grant proposal reviews. linked? probably not directly...

Julie Sedivy reviews "Bye Bye I Love You" by linguist Michael Erard: "In a society that prizes verbal skill, we’re conditioned to see the beginnings of language as the child’s entry into communal society." https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/the-thing-youve-been-saying-your-whole-life/

If FB and Xitter never existed, or Friendster before them, I would probably still be in Austin

I realized that my migration pattern was underwritten in part by social media. When we moved to New England from Texas, FB was hopping and the geography of the social network altered. Suddenly you could be anywhere physically and be connected. Or "feel" connected. Until you weren't.

there's been a couple things I've seen about profs developing tactile materials for IPA and syntax trees for blind/low vision students (bc neither translate well to Braille). i have lots of sense memories of chalk from my early syntax foray, keep thinking about doing 3d models w/ gumdrops/toothpicks
