Key take-away: Political communication by mainstream parties plays a central role in the electoral success of the far right. When mainstream parties adopt far-right issues, they help to disseminate far-right ideas and legitimise them.
tevoelker.bsky.social
Cultural issues, in particular debates on the policy-oriented issues of migration and integration, shape the communication of mainstream parties.
Figure mainstream actor issue-emphasis
tevoelker.bsky.social
Far-right agenda-setting has increased over time. The issue emphasis of far-right actors increasingly drives the issue emphasis of mainstream parties. While far-right agenda-setting effects can be seen across different party ideologies, it is stronger for opposition than for government parties.
Figure far-right agenda setting

The automated text analysis of 520,408 articles in 6 newspapers shows that mainstream parties have contributed to the discursive mainstreaming of the far right. We use novel data of semi-automatically collected lists of far-right actors and parties and employ topic models and time series analysis.
tevoelker.bsky.social
How and under what conditions do far-right actors influence the communication of mainstream parties? We take a discourse perspective on far-right mainstreaming and present a large-scale empirical assessment of far-right agenda setting in public debates since the 1990s in Germany.

New study out today—“Is the Urban-Rural Divide Affectively Polarised?“ finds a substantial political cleavage between urban and rural populations in multiple European countries. Place-based affective polarization is associated with voting along liberal vs nationalist divide #PoliticalScience
