For reasons known only to my subconscious, I’ve abruptly decided it’s a good time for a rewatch of the 2015 Amazon show Patriot. Incredibly stacked supporting cast, dark, funny, and sad. A show too strange and beautiful for this cruel world of ours. Maybe people just don’t appreciate piping anymore.

FIFA and FOX are of course going to fall all over themselves to praise Trump. During the Russia 2018 WC FOX ran a human interest story on Stalin’s summer house when he wanted to relax. If you can’t draw a line at Stalin, there’s no line.

Didn’t realize they made a whole skincare line just for twitter users, good for them!

This sandwich shop is C.C. Sabathia and Kevin Smith approved, two guys whose opinions on sandwiches I’m willing to trust.

It’s cheating but the best answer is Bess Flowers, a background actress who was in hundreds of movies, including dozens of the best films of all time. For decades she seems to have been in everything. Vertigo, The Big Sleep, The Lady Eve, Singing In The Rain and it keeps going

Slipping in just under the wire, today’s poem:
Thanks by W.S. Merwin

Listen
with the night falling we are saying thank you

Dearly beloved
We are gathered here today to get through this thing called life
Electric word, life
It means forever and that's a mighty long time
But I'm here to tell you there's something else
The afterworld
A world of never ending happiness
You can always see the sun
Day or night

This Hudson News has a surprisingly great book selection, but I’m real curious who is at the airport and thinks, “yes, now is the time for the unabridged Les Misérables.” A great book but a terrible impulse purchase

So tonight we’re watching the episode that covers the 30s, the end of the era of Ruth and Gehrig, the rise of DiMaggio and Satchel Paige etc. At the end they have a clip about the inaugural class of the Baseball Hall of Fame and is it me or does Grover Cleveland Alexander look like David Lynch?

Reading a lot of Robert Aickman, who wrote strange and uncanny horror stories. And it hit me how in a bunch of them his protagonists are basically Tim Robinson trying and failing to understand the rules to the world they’ve stumbled into e.g. The Hospice or The Same Dog.
In this essay I will…

Oh my god this game is killing me. Even when good things happen for the Dodgers it’s still agony

Win or lose this has been a fun season, but I’d rather win tonight

Día de los Muertos is beautiful in its simplicity, remembering loved ones who are gone. Not a day of mourning but of celebration. And with food like this it’s rocketing up my list of favorite holidays.

Our 12.5 pounds of candy and 5 pounds of potatoes are gone. Definitely the most trick or treaters ever. Louise Belcher is tired

I was skeptical but the high schooler insisted potatoes are the hot treat, and they were right. Kids are so excited to get a potato. Like with 6-7, I don’t think it’s supposed to make sense

Tomorrow will be the first Halloween in 9 years where we don’t have a kid in elementary school, which means no costume parade. It was always one of my favorite events of the year.
Throwback to one happy little witch

Hope this guy is having a good Halloween week, it’s his time to shine.

Watching Chopping Mall (1986). It’s not the best 80s horror movie, but it might be the most 80s horror movie. Has anyone connected the mall kill-bots to generative AI? There’s an essay in there somewhere. But I just want to have fun watching this one.

Underrated aspect of baseball is this guy wouldn’t look out of place in any dugout since 1972. Just a baseball dude
