Meanwhile, Meta's workforce grew 4% in Q1 and keeps growing steadily even alongside the high-profile trickle of headlines about layoffs, cost-cutting, etc.

*There was another ~5% cut in the Feb performance review cycle which may partially land in Q2: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Thing is though: it won't happen and if it did there would be offsets (the dollar for one).

Is there any reason to think Beijing won't just set the currency fix at a level that offsets the tariffs to maintain market share? Yet to see any indication they're going to seriously tackle their domestic underconsumption problem.

By undercutting manufacturing in these countries, these cheap imports can result in a net decline in total production, in which case consumers in these countries will actually consume less because their incomes will decline faster than the prices of consumer goods.

Feel like a better version is: do not try to time the market on any time horizon.

Beyond the theology and Catholic teachings: It is just plain un-American.

Go tell your kids their classmate is gone forever because his mom didn't have the right papers. Disgusting.

Is deporting a family of immigrants treating them with dignity? You have to do some pretty complicated mental gymnastics to spin deportations of human beings as anything other than anti-Catholic. Deportation is an act without mercy, without love, without dignity and without God. It's in the book!

U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), Strangers No Longer: Together on the Journey of Hope (2003):

“Our faith requires us to welcome the stranger among us—whether they come legally or not—and to treat them with dignity and respect.”

Deuteronomy 10:18-19: “[God] executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.”

Matthew 25:35-40: “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”

Exodus 22:21: “Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt."

No Catholic in good faith could support a policy that reinterprets literal scripture in a way that says "Sure but they don't have the right papers so we are arresting them and their families for immediate deportation."

That is not a policy that respects the dignity of man. It is cruelty.

With respect:

Leviticus 19:33-34: “When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.”

The Fed has a mandate to control inflation. If a 2nd Trump term is inflationary (it is)....then they were just doing their job.

Powell!

"...there is nothing at all in Church teaching that requires any Catholic or Christian to be opposed to deporting illegal immigrants."

This is a statement without christian love, compassion and mercy. Every single undocumented immigrant in America is part of a community and most have family here.
February 12, 2025 at 2:10 AM
Pope Francis has spoken against a purely legalistic approach to immigration that ignores the human consequences of deportation.
February 12, 2025 at 2:07 AM
If deportation leads to harm, family separation, or ignores the dignity of individuals, it would be very problematic to support as a Catholic. The Church advocates for comprehensive immigration reform that balances legal order with compassion and justice.
