Dear colleagues and friends,

A quarter of a century after its last major refurbishment, the GHIL is embarking on a new project to renovate and modernise its building. In a few weeks the builders will move in to make the public facing rooms of the Institute ready for the coming decades. 🧱🔨

The number of “cides” in Gaza is growing, but beyond its destruction of schools, hospitals, farmland and entire family lineages, Israel is also engaging in historicide — the destruction of history itself — argues @lsmwilson.bsky.social in @newlinesmag.bsky.social

Vanished by @sadiahqureshi.bsky.social is such an exceptional book. It traces the history of how Western scientists have understood #extinction, and the political and social implications of that thinking, including on colonial fantasies of replacing Indigenous peoples. I can't recommend it enough! 👏
The cover of Sadiah Qureshi's Vanished: An Unnatural History of Extinction. It shows a historical image of an elaborated Mastodon skeleton towering above an elephant being ridden by a man, while a Native American man and a colonist in a suit and top-hat look on.

“According to @sadiahqureshi.bsky.social animal extinction should not be treated as a separate historical development from human extermination.” ‼️

A huge thanks to Penguin for giving me these seeded bookmarks to mark the publication of my book Vanished on Thursday. I’ll give them out at launch events to the first people buying the book, or bringing copies, so that they can grow wildflowers as they read about amazing ways of being.
🌱🌺🌸🌼🌱
Front and back designs for a bookmark.

Front features the following text:
‘Extinction extinguishes ways of being: a coalescence of possibilities, a quickening of leaf, wing, scale, and bone into lives we call trees, bees, sharks, tigers, or human.

Extinction isn't just a natural phenomenon: it's a political choice.’

Back features an image of the book’s front cover with the following text:

'A vital and important book’
DAVID OLUSOGA

'A marvellous, troubling, moving and important book lit with hope’
HELEN MACLONALD

‘Enthralling, devastating and yet empowering’
OLIVETTE OTELE
