Midwest prickly. Reefer mad. Chock full of mental illness (ADHD, OCD, depression, etc.) and not at all bitter about it.

Politics, Packers, computers, sci-fi... Nerd stuff.

SocDem. Not a fan of "teaching Dems a lesson" at the expense of the poor.

Guys this is deranged. The Consultant Democrats are hopeless, utterly incapable of meeting the moment

This has been the middle ground since Obama announced it and Joe Lieberman and friends helped nix it.

We're not getting single payer before we get a public option.

We've been talking about this since Obama's first term. The groundwork is there. People who want to keep their private insurance can.
Every blue state needs a public health insurance option YESTERDAY.

Conservatives want to strip healthcare from you & your kids. They tripled marketplace prices. Now they're killing Medicaid.

We can let Reps attack working families. Or we can protect them with a public plan.
Dr Oz says they’re withholding all Medicaid funds for Minnesota.

This will kill people.

They’re going to force the most vulnerable to suffer to score political points.

There are other ways to address alleged fraud that don’t involve leaving the disabled, poor and marginalized without healthcare.

It's the late 70s. We've just had a supply shock (oil). Everyone is freaking out and decides to oust the Democrat who's started to fix the problem (Carter) in favor of a former actor who lobbied against vital welfare programs and campaigned on deregulation (Reagan).

Reagan cuts taxes for the...

In this moment in time, it's important to remember that there's no frontrunner for the Democratic primaries.

Right now, a progressive could run a campaign and win.

If the majority of people don't vote for that progressive in the primaries, hopefully we still have good turnout in the general.

It would appear OP is removing the ability to QT their post. This (screenshot in Karl's post) is what I QT'd with "Contrapoints meme."
Lol people need to fucking relax

Not sure why the original QT says "Removed by author," but I was QTing this when I said "Contrapoints meme."

There's a subcategory of online leftists who look at everything Will says through the lens of him ostensibly saying "we should maintain the status quo," which I don't think he's ever said.

What he will do is point out when the status quo (e.g. the economy at large) and feelings about the status...
Do you want me to apologize for… consistently supporting single-payer?
Yeah Will, it’s almost like the people who said we need single payer universal coverage were right? Still waiting for an apology from you on that.

This, in a vacuum. Forget about who's saying it.

We saw people vote for a fascist because they were mad about having less wealth as a function of Covid inflation.

I want single payer healthcare. Does anyone have any idea how to make the average American voter receptive to paying more in taxes?
I think people assume UHC is what they want it to be rather than understanding the nuance and details. Yes it’s been done all around the world. But there are very significant different cultural differences and expectations in other countries. We don’t like to give up anything, or pay more

"I don't understand why I need to have a health care proposal ready when I'm mocking *this* person's proposal. That isn't the job of random Bluesky posters."

It's not that you need to have a detailed policy proposal. It's that you're so ready to criticize with no idea how to actually improve...

This shouldn't be controversial.

But there are unironically people who will defend those trolls because "we need to build a coalition.'

And that coalition should apparently be with trolls.
No, I don't believe every person I dislike is a troll. But if you only ever engage to either draw in massive dogpiles of extremely abusive followers, or to tell people they should die, or should be stuffed in a locker, or are "giant pissbaby," or whatever, yeah, you are a troll who should be banned.
Your problem is believing every person you dislike is a troll. A good chunk are, others are sincere but hostile, and to still others YOU are the troll. "banning who will personally thinks is a troll" will not inevitably make bluesky popular.

The reason most people do not get swarmed is that most people either leave or adjust what they say publicly to avoid it. No one disputes that this dynamic controls Twitter right now; every day some pundit pioneers dangerous new levels of brain poisoning. But then we pretend Bluesky is immune

If the general consensus is a.) that most elected Democrats suck, and also b.) that any Democrat is better than a Republican who will *actively* do more harm than the status quo, then a general consensus that should logically follow is c.) we need to defeat those Democrats, not that we need to...

When the line moves from "I don't like Will Stancil, he's insufferable" to "He's a fascist, and so are you for meeting with him," the Contrapoints meme looks pretty sound.
A local leftist had a beer with me and people are being predictably normal about her now

This is what sunk Biden.

I wish I could remember who it was that I watched recently who echoed a feeling I've had for awhile: the middle class sucks.

They spend outside of their means on things they don't need and then complain about "the struggle."
The change is that a number that used to say 2.00 now says 2.42. Like, that’s it. That’s what changed. But people are earning more and buying more. The number being higher doesn’t mean anything. The idea that this would inherently have a profound effect on our society is nonsensical

I started off slightly lukewarm toward Pluribus, but I've come around to it a lot.

Went to see Cake tonight. Great concert. John McCrea is awesome.

Was telling the friend I went with that I had Chipotle last night and it tasted like wet beef jerky. And that's a good thing. Beef barbacoa for the win.

The US economy is imperfect but most people are consuming more than ever before. In general, America is more affordable than ever before. Even the most notable exception - housing - is complicated. Panic over "affordability" is reactionary nostalgia, given a respectable policy veneer.
Nope. Doomer nostalgia about a fake past in which "all families were single earners & they all owned homes!" is the reactionary sentiment. Telling the truth is always better for the left.

The bus station is an interesting place.

A woman walked up to me and asked me if I knew anything about the Holy Roman Empire. Then she asked if they were the same as the Nazis. Then she asked me why I was wearing a mask. When I said I didn't want to get sick, she started talking about chemicals...

I posted awhile back about how it was bad that Newsom is the only Democrat getting media attention ahead of the 2028 campaign season, because it makes it more likely he's the eventual nominee.

A good conversation where Hasan pushes Obama on authenticity and incrementalism and Obama delivers some good answers. I stopped watching around 26:00, when they start doing the "fun questions."

Some people are persuadable through gentle listening.

A lot of people aren't. They're persuadable through embarrassment.

This is how South Park persuades people. "Lol, you thought *that*? Embarrassing."
this is the optimal liberalism
