Educated as a scientist and attorney, now just a well-informed spectator. Gay, environmentalist, atheist, liberal. I am an active home chef, read science fiction, science non-fiction, and history. Also a bird-watcher and amateur naturalist. In NYC
My latest audiobook, this written by a reporter. It was a slice of NYC history from 1986-90 & focused on politics. It reminded me of NYC then & filled in details. The birth of two NYCs, the racial tension & how bad the AIDS epidemic was, struck me. Thanks NY Public Library for the loan #booksky

My latest audiobook, I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t exactly what I thought it would be. Its focus is not fish & the science of their hearing. While that’s part of it, it focuses on marine mammals & the problem of sound pollution in the oceans. Thanks NY Public Library for the loan. #booksky #NYPL

I did a line drawing of the coelacanth at the American Museum of Natural history @amnh.org a few days ago. This morning I colored in that drawing with charcoal colored pencils. #SundayFishSketch #AMNH

I had extra cherry tomatoes & wanted something less rich with no meat or cream for a change. My first thought was a quick pasta sauce. I saw this 3 tomato sauce on the Milk Street site. It has cherry tomatoes, tomato paste & a 14oz can of crushed tomatoes. Recipe below 1/2 🍜🍽️ #foodsky #cooking

I was back at the American Museum of Natural History @amnh.org for members night again. This time I drew the coelacanth hanging from the ceiling in the fossil fish section. I was careful to fit it on the page. I saw an actual preserved coelacanth in #AMNH at a behind the scenes tour years ago.

I was back at the Center for Brooklyn History for a book talk. Gods of New York written by Jonathan Mahler is about NYC in the late 1980’s. It made me remember all the chaos back then. On the right is Bob Herbert formerly at the NYT who reported for the Daily News in the 1980’s. #booksky #history

My latest audiobook. The author is an actor & an avid birder, even on the board of the National Audubon Society. I worked at the New York City chapter of Audubon 10 years ago, and I recognize the names & knew some of the people she mentioned. Thanks NY Public Library for the loan. 💙📚 #booksky #NYPL

My voyage into the world of meatballs continues with another new recipe for me. These are Norwegian meatballs in gravy. The unique thing about them is powdered allspice & ginger are added to the meat mix. The meat mix is part beef & part pork. Recipe below. 1/2 🍽️🍜 #foodsky #meatballs

This is my latest read. This was a hard copy book. I like the convenience of ebooks but I miss holding a paper book. This is a short story collection, horror stories written by Native Americans. I gives a glimpse into that culture. Thanks @bklynlibrary.bsky.social for the loan. #booksky #bpl

My usual cooking themes are about one region or ethnic food culture. I decided to try something new. I am making meatballs from different countries. These are Königsberger Klopse, German meatballs in a lemon caper sauce. The idea of meatballs with that sauce seemed unique. Recipe below. 1/2 #foodsky

My latest completed book. I initially thought it was about nature in the U.S. prairies, but so little remains untouched. It was more about man’s transformation of the prairie into agricultural land & the efforts to limit the damage of industrial farming. Thanks #NYPL for the loan. 💙📚 #booksky

I was back at the New York Public Library for another author talk. The author Sangramithra Iyer was moved by her experiences with animals & her Indian family’s vegetarianism. Hearing about her travels & how she researched was interesting. #booksky #NYPL

I went to an early release of Rental Family at the Japan Society @japansociety.org tonight. It was followed by a talk with director Hikari & actors Brendan Fraser & Mari Yamamoto who had great shoes. The movie was great & it was free but only for members. SUBTLE HINT: get a membership. #JapanSociety

I went to another science presentation at the Simons Foundation. This was about how organisms coerce or cooperate & much of the details were about the relationships between trees & root fungi which I thought was particularly interesting after reading Entangled Life. #science @simonsfoundation.org

My latest completed book. It’s long (24hr audio) but very interesting. It ranges from the beginning of the revolution to present day. It traces ‘originalism’ to the early 1900’s where the then 1% created a worship of the constitution to block the public good. Thanks #NYPL for the loan. #booksky

I had leftover spaetzle and was thinking about a protein for it. I wondered about German style meatballs & found a recipe. This was a basic meatball recipe but a bit of mustard is added to the mix. I made a pan sauce & added some Dijon to match the meatballs. Recipe below 1/2 🍜🍽️ #foodsky #cooking

I was back at the Center for Brooklyn History (part of @bklynlibrary.bsky.social) this evening for a book talk, Declaring Independence by Ed Larson. The topic was the year 1776 in U.S. history. That year was important not for any one thing, but multiple lines converging. #bpl #booksky

I made a new for me side dish for dinner with leftovers. It’s brussel sprouts with apples and bacon. I halved the amount of bacon because I find recipes like this too much bacon competes with rather than complements the brussel sprouts. Recipe below. 1/2 #foodsky #cooking

My latest audiobook. It’s a full history of the relations of European colonists & Native Americans. It highlights Native Americans’ central role in early U.S. history & egregious treatment they received at the hands of Europeans & the US. Thanks @bklynlibrary.bsky.social for the loan #booksky #BPL

The my new recipe for dinner was buttered spaetzle. The bratwurst, mustard & sauerkraut were leftovers. Spaetzle can be tricky to make, dropping small pieces of wet dough or batter into boiling water. I crashed & burned on my first attempt but I tried again. Recipe below 1/2 🍜🍽️ #foodsky #cooking

I was back at Simons for another science presentation. This one was about exploring life in the lightless areas of the deep oceans with a marine biologist who has been on hundreds of deep dives. She made a lure to find giant squids! Thanks to the @simonsfoundation.org for the talk. #science

I’m coming close to ending my Oktoberfest them, but I’m not quite there. This is Hungarian-style bratwurst, rotkraut & baked German potato salad. The bratwurst is more like a smoked sausage than the usual pale, soft pork sausage. Recipes below. 1/3 🍜🍽️ #foodsky #cooking

I was back at the American Museum of Natural History’s SciCafe, a monthly informal lecture series with drinks available. This one was about bats, in particular biodiversity in the Caribbean Islands. Before the lecture starts trivia questions are posted, the answer is false. #AMNH #SciCafe
