The current visa system already leaves many migrants facing poverty, working multiple jobs, as they pay the often tens of thousands of pounds in costs.

Proposed changes from this government continues the dehumanising treatment of us as we are treated as second class.

We don’t need more detention & deportation flights. We need investment in housing, schools & healthcare.
Civil society calls on the EU to withdraw this Regulation and build policies rooted in dignity, care & solidarity.
migrantvoice.bsky.social
3️⃣ Surveillance & punishment:
From racial profiling & raids, to GPS tagging & phone surveillance, to punishing people for being “uncooperative” - this is about control, not care.
migrantvoice.bsky.social
2️⃣ Expansion of detention
Detention could be extended up to 24 months - even for children. This creates profits for private contractors while destroying people’s health & dignity.
migrantvoice.bsky.social
1️⃣ Deportations without ties:
The proposal allows people to be deported to countries they’ve never set foot in. Families & communities would be torn apart, with lives pushed into danger & limbo.
migrantvoice.bsky.social
We stand with @picumofficial.bsky.social in calling out the EU's proposed Deportation Regulations.

🚨 The EU’s new “Return Regulation” expands detention - including in offshore sites - fuels racial profiling & strips away rights.

Here’s why civil society is united in rejecting it ⬇️

Nazek Ramadan, Director of Migrant Voice, said: "Among the promises made by this government before it came to power was to reduce the use of camps and ensure people seeking asylum were treated humanely.
This decision is a slap in the face to those promises."

Over the summer we have seen an increasing "normalisation" of hostile rhetoric and actions against migrants, including those seeking asylum. This is emboldened by a media and political narrative which fails to challenge misinformation. Our latest editorial👇

The situation in the UK, and elsewhere in the world, is becoming a lot scarier for many migrants.

Since we wrote our report in the conditions people seeking asylum face in hotels, quoted in the article, the situation has not improved, and for some has worsened. The rampant misinformation, and protests, we see about hotels ignore the reality of what they are like.

Was Rylan right to say asylum seekers are living it up in hotels?
In 2022, Rylan told Big Issue he “wouldn’t censor himself”. But is there any truth to this anti-small boats tirade?

Migrant charity director 'relieved' by ruling

The director of the charity Migrant Voice says she is "relieved" following the Court of Appeal's ruling.

"The alternative was setting a dangerous precedent which would embolden the far right to further target those seeking safety," Nazek Ramadan tells the BBC.

She points out that there are still "many serious issues with hotels for people seeking asylum", with many often lacking "the most basic of necessities".

"Until this government starts investing in community schemes to provide better support though, hotels are at least better than the leaving people in camps or making them homeless," she adds.

As our report, No Rest No Security, showed, many hotels used for people seeking asylum are unsuitable. We need investment in community support. Sadly, the recent High Court judgement regarding Epping risks seeing people placed in even more inhumane conditions.
www.migrantvoice.org/resources/re...
The High Court’s decision to block people seeking asylum from being placed in a hotel in Epping opens the door for more councils to follow suit, placing those who came to this country seeking safety under yet more uncertainty and fear.
We know from our own report into the use of hotels that many are unsuitable, but this judgement does nothing to change that. Instead, it risks leaving those in need of support out in the cold, or placed in inhumane camps.
Rhetoric by this, and the previous, government, have contributed to hostility towards those in hotels, when they could have been investing in community schemes to support everyone.
It is imperative that those who have come to this country seeking sanctuary receive it, and are not allowed to become yet more victims of the far-right hate we have seen spreading across this country.
