Looking at the kill tracker top right I particularly like that he avenged you by shooting your assailant, and then got you back up and in the fight. That's a premium service right there.

I'd say one aspect of it is thematic reinforcement. Call of Cthulhu's Int roll when you have a large Sanity loss, for example.

You want to fail that roll, because if you succeed and rationally comprehend the impossibility of what you just experienced, you go temporarily insane.

I tried to explain this to some people last night. I have personal experience (someone who work in UK Gov Digital) of fraud algorithms flagging an address with many claimants. It turned out it was a church, one of the very few safe stable postal addresses the local homeless population could supply.

Unfortunately there's not enough emphasis on accessibility in the development of digital products and services. It's a long term problem across the industry, I very much suspect in part because of the relatively narrow demographic that works within it.

And also the assumption that this all has to be delivered by smart phone, which understandably some people can't afford or don't want. You don't have to personally buy an ATM to get money out of a bank. The card is a key to unlock access to an entire digital infrastructure

It's so inconsistent as well. Home produced digital scan of a finance print document acceptable. Pdf statement generated by me from within a financial app, no. Identity management is an incoherent mess in the UK.

Or maybe, evaluate the problems that have arisen from the schemes already implemented by other countries and look at designs that mitigate them? I'm not saying this is straightforward.
September 25, 2025 at 9:21 PM
I'm suspicious of handing over information, but some of our public (and private) services are unnecessarily convoluted and expensive because we don't have a straightforward way of answering the question "who are you?"
September 25, 2025 at 8:23 PM
Because services who have to ID you now have another stream of ID to check in addition to existing sources under your proposal More cost, etc. I think a universal ID in principle isn't a bad idea, the devil is in the detail. What data is asked for as part of that identity, and why?
September 25, 2025 at 8:21 PM
I totally get the argument about what if those in power are bad actors and we have ID cards. But if they are in power they'd just be able to ride roughshod over GDPR protections that separate existing data sets to assemble a profile of the citizenry if they wanted.
September 25, 2025 at 8:06 PM
That adds complexity to the existing mess. Want to prove who you are? Use the new (presumably Government issued) ID, or your passport (Gov ID), or driving license (Gov ID). The government still gets to know who you are. It still needs to know who you are.
September 25, 2025 at 8:03 PM
that an address got flagged for potential fraud. Turned out it was a church and the local homeless population had to use that for at least basic validation. Access to services would be made easier by consistent, universal proof of identity. At the moment we have the need, but the provision is a mess
September 25, 2025 at 7:18 PM
One of the issues we have in the UK is that currently proof of identity mostly relies on documents that assume certain incomes and lifestyles. Passport, driving license, mortgage or utility bills etc. I know from personal experience (someone who worked with gov data science teams on this issue) 1/2

It's inspired by Celtic mythology, with a strong dash of harsh not-quite-reality, so might not be your thing, based on what you've mentioned. I'm going to have a listen to the ones you've recommended, I really enjoy a good audio drama.

Last Dance is very good too. Pretty amazing they did the whole first series for practically nothing. Now (successfully) kickstarting the second one. rustyquill.com/show/last-da...

They're so good. Julian Simpson's earlier audio drama can be found on Soundcloud, I think. Set in a similar fictional universe

Sound and attitude wise there's definitely a 4AD/Domino Pixies/Pavement feel to a chunk of their material. Maybe even a bit of Real Ramona era Throwing Muses.

For me Eve Online was a genuinely unique gaming experience. For all the time where very little happened, the peaks of PvP really made up for it. Being part of a trio that went on an 18 month-long wormhole rampage in T3 cruisers was so much fun. We blew up so many space pixels.
