Bari Weiss is one of the most uniquely untalented human beings alive. ostensibly things have been going well for her for years now and I haven't noticed because I think she's such a flop. she could become president and I'd still think "what is that flop up to these days"

i don’t think i’ll ever get over how we’re sending people to torture prison camps in el salvador STILL and those in charge of CBS want us to pretend it’s an old story that’s been resolved. people are still being tortured!

The recent trans rights cases--Skrmetti on health care, the shadow docket passport order, and the pending athletics cases--should be seen in this context, as vehicles for chipping away at the promise of equal protection
The right, along the Roberts Court, is trying to nullify the Reconstruction amendments guaranteeing equality under the law, in order to restore the Antebellum Constitution, which envisions “liberty” as an eternal aristocracy of race and class (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...

Grading finals, and it's become clear that LLMs absolutely fail at presenting and interpreting qualitative data. They can give an overview of the thesis, but cannot cite examples--or even say *where and when* the ethnographic work was done.

I think the coolest part of CUNY's single sign on system is that you have to sign in multiple times on the same account to access different things.

Do texts from politicians work on anyone? I just don't get how no one considers that blowing up someone's phone every day with a selfie and a request for money creates a really negative association.

the entire debate cis people have about trans people is moronic to start but it’s also a debate most trans people don’t care about, being that if we are viewed as “real women or men” or not. no one gives a fuck. it changes nothing about the reality that transitioning rocks

Each and every time I saw Cats, a movie that would have rocky horror level cult status today if not for COVID-19
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

It is insane how many of the replies are like, "if I can't drive 75 in a residential zone then how can I stop the 30-50 feral hogs that run into my yard within 3-5 minutes while my small kids play?"
My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

Yes, but also ban cars in the outer boroughs.
ban cars from manhattan entirely, 15mph speed limit in the outer burroughs. why is anyone driving anyway it’s such a pain in the ass in new york

The bourgeois class dimension of anti-wokeness became so clear after those managers were elated with Trump, which they interpreted as a license for yelling slurs at their employees without consequence.
“Those of us on the left should be fighting to improve protections for workers of all races, and thereby for the betterment of people’s material conditions regardless of their views,” Arash Azizi argues:
Why the Cinnabon Story Doesn’t Make Me Happy
The left should be promoting working-class solidarity, not delighting in seeing workers summarily dismissed.

An HIV doctor quit the CDC when they insisted on censoring his research by removing data on trans people. This interview peels back the curtain of how anti-trans ideology figured into the Trump administration's war on science.

You might think from the headline that this is a story about a trans kid suffering medical consequences from a large drug dose but nope! It is just an interview with an estranged father who is angry that his child happily transitioned.

This is what every university administrator is already doing tho: reducing academics to job training and relying on underpaid, precarious workers. All it does is make everyone miserable. It’s not new or audacious; it’s been the conservative blueprint since the late 1970s!
I mean, in what sense will you be able to say the college “survived”?

one of the main reasons trans healthcare moved away from strict gatekeeping and toward informed consent & GAC is that trans ppl who were denied the means to transition would simply seek it out elsewhere
What did you think would happen when you restricted access to care?

S03E11 of Buffy, “Gingerbread,” is such a good allegory about moral panics. Concern for the wellbeing of children results in the persecution of women and queer people, cops confiscate books from the library, all spurred by the town’s reactionary hallucinations.
