📢 Funded PhD opportunities for UK candidates in beautiful Edinburgh. Get in touch if you're interested in a PhD on understanding the mechanisms of soil carbon cycling and the role of microbes. We work in different ecosystems: peatlands, forests and agricultural soils. Please repost/spread the word.
Poster showing the following text: PhD in microbial mechanisms of soil carbon cycling. Soil microbes shape the global carbon cycle in life and death. We study the effect of aboveground land management on belowground soil carbon cycling processes. We aim create a scalable understanding of microbial processes from single cells to populations to communities to ecosystems. Pictures with text: peatland restoration, sustainable agriculture and woodland regeneration.

Bryophytes hold a larger gene family space than vascular plants - Nature Genetics
A super-pangenome analysis incorporating 123 newly sequenced bryophyte genomes reveals that bryophytes exhibit a larger number of unique and lineage-specific gene families than vascular plants.

The bright green, feathery moss Thuidium sp. is widely distributed across the globe—from tropical cloud forests to temperate forests. In nitrogen-poor ecosystems, Thuidium sp. and other mosses are heavily colonised by nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, contributing significantly to total ecosystem nitrogen input. In this new paper, @albertbrangari.bsky.social develops a new theoretically grounded approach to represent both microbial growth and respiration in a unified framework that can be interfaced immediately into Earth System Models framework, thus incorporating ecological insights into biogeochemistry

Our ability to predict how biology will feed back to climate change relies on our ability to convert biological insights into mathematica formulations that can be scaled up in structured ways, within the context of Earth System Models (ESMs)...

🌋 Evolutionary processes shape plant ecological strategies linked to disturbances like volcanism on Tenerife Island. Primary succession is governed by the selection of functional traits related to environmental conditions, acquisitive-conservative strategies and dispersal capacity. buff.ly/lpm5WXB
