Gibson Style J mando-bass
I know this isn't a guitar, but it's one of the goofiest things I've seen in a while, so I've gotta share it. The Gibson Style J mando-bass is what it sounds like: a mandolin-shaped acoustic bass. It's not one of the cool mandolins with the scroll, however, but a normal oval-shaped one with a circular soundhole next to the neck. It's got a spruce top and maple back & sides. There seems to be some sort of external bracing running across the body, close to the sound hole. Maybe it's just a hand rest or something? This picture came from the 1917 Gibson catalog. The guy playing the mando-bass is playing it upright, but I have seen pictures of people playing one on their lap like a regular guitar.
