I took the 10 y.o. to my German lessons in Vienna, she told the tutor her Māori surname, tutor repeated it, and the town she came from. 10 y.o turns to me and says "how come she can say Māori words better than you can?"

tbf the vowel sounds are very close, unlike NZ English.

Confirming suspicions that the terms of his exit most resemble a non-disclosure agreement, the deal gags Orr from criticising the Quigley or Willis.

In return for payment of six months worth of salary, it bars him from disparaging the bank, its board, individual members of the board, the Treasury, the Minister of Finance or the Government generally.

‘Adrian Orr had confidential information, but more to the point, he was a party to the unsavoury proceedings before his departure. There was such a heightened level of sensitivity around the circumstances of his departure, and what prompted it, that they tried to seal it off.’

Radical idea here - how about stop shitting on our young?

"See Hughes, (2025a) and Hughes & Crichton (2025). Between 25% and 30% of everyone born in New Zealand is living overseas by age 30, and emigration rates are even higher among those with tertiary qualifications. Student loan holders living overseas commonly cease repayments, and these loans are sometimes written off as a result. Ministry of Education (2023)."

He Tirohanga Mokopuna is Treasury's long-term fiscal statement and it's full of woe about the funding of NZ Super. Not enough about maybe trying a LOT harder to keep people here.

Not to mention a government obligation (given kids must go to school) to provide an education that is sufficient (but not limited) to ensuring the student is capable of doing said job - even if/especially if that requires post-school education.
