Genuinely very excited for the critical conversation about this game 20 years later. There’s a lot to unpack, great and abysmal, in this very stupid game I’m in love with.

The first time you touch the stick, you walk two steps and then watch another cinematic. It’s hilarious. The pacing is fucked. Some of the scenes are nightmarishly long, especially at the end.
But goddamn do I think they’re excellent at what they’re trying to do most of the time. It’s for me 🥰

As a super fan, I absolutely agree 😂 I just can’t think of a less interesting criticism for a game, especially one of his than “it has story scenes.” and that was the bulk of conversation around it at the time. Flaws and all, those are some of the best scenes and storytelling in the series IMO!

Boy I fundamentally disagree with this. This supposes that having cutscenes is inherently bad, which is not true.
Whether those scenes are effective is an interesting critical conversation.
But I think if you are having an unhappy time because cinematics exist, that’s a personal problem
