Every single time a character in any of Ursula's books does something reckless or endangering, they have a clearly comprehensible established motivation specific to that character.

I never think, "oh, that's for the plot to happen."

Humans grow (muuuuch!) too slowly to be good meat animals. Pigs grow to 250 lbs in *six months*.
And can turn anything even semi-edible into prime protein. We should honour our pigs and treat them well, but we could never be as useful to them as they are to us.

A single t-cell takes in information from a range of inputs, makes decisions, takes actions, and communicates with peers, cooperating in a peer-to-peer (no central command authority) system.
These are not “small-n” systems. And he should know this.

The examples he uses are really strange. T-cells are highly complex cells involved in and controlling immune response. *Each* such cell is probably more complex (possibly by orders of magnitude) than our highest-performing LLM. These are not “small-n” systems by any stretch of the imagination.

I mean… We have a *single* data point on “consciousness”: Humans developed it. A single data point tells us *nothing*. “Oh it must be because of how the system just became so complex” is …not supported by anything anywhere. It’s on the level of “god did it!” as explanations go.

Yes we can. The way it makes mistakes is exactly indicative of nonconciousness.
Of a lack of any sense of comprehension of its inputs.

Psychological projection. You feel a thing, so you think someone else must be feeling that thing. You are thinking of a thing, so what someone else says must be in response to those thoughts.
