That, to me, is the essence of good character-driven action. The character does things because that is what they must do in order to become congruent with who they can stand to be.

I instead feel that this is exactly what this character would do in this moment.

And I ESPECIALLY appreciate those who think or say, "this is a terrible idea but I obviously have no choice." And that lack of choice is always because the character MUST do this to be able to live with themselves.

Every single time a character in any of Ursula's books does something reckless or endangering, they have a clearly comprehensible established motivation specific to that character.

I never think, "oh, that's for the plot to happen."

The first book I have read since getting a concussion 25 days ago was What Stalks the Deep, by @tkingfisher.com.

It was a delight, as always!

There is a thing in ALL of Ursula's writing that I want to appreciate here:

Character motivation when doing dumb things.

State of the World vs. Mental Health, Media Consumption Scale, status update:

Finding a video essay about the inevitable next Carrington Event to be interesting and soothing.

I personally, as a member of a household with lethal cat allergies, would do the following:

Purchase and set up a live-trap.
Hope I get the cat and not a raccoon or oppossum
Upon getting the cat, wear an N95 and nitrile gloves and drop it off at the nearest no-kill shelter

One item on my daily to-do list is "cook a meal." Another is "step outside on the house."

Little habits add up.

My wish for ALL of you, but especially my fellow nerodivergents. (including the socially castigated,) undiagnosed, queers (esp. nonpassing as cishet,) disabled, jobless, mentally ill, crippled, and chronically ill - to EVERYONE reading this but ESPECIALLY to y'all;

May you catch a fucking break.

As far as I know, NMIXX is the only kpop group who practices their *singing* during dance practices. Most groups* practice dancing and then rely on their cardio (and the backing tracks) when performing live. These women are amazing.

* Of those that DO sing live. Some do not.

It's October 7th.

As an American gentile, I most often speak against the ongoing genocide perpetrated by the alliance of the U.S. and Israeli governments.

But I do not forget that Hamas massacred civilians, ripping people out of their homes and communities to use them as hostage-shields.

I have never seen:

Sex and the City
Any Stargate tv shows
Buckaroo Banzai (I have tried multiple times and I cannot stand it)

I have only heard Al Yankovic songs that were played on Chicago commercial radio stations

I have never watched a full episode of Saturday Night Live

Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.

I grew up in Chicago and I *still* think there is good graft and bad graft.

New #LetsTalkTelevision! I have a lot to say about the very bad no good portrayal of mental healthcare in this week's #BrilliantMinds and OG #Law&Order. But two of my longstanding OTPs kissed and #SVU remembered that Elliot exists for the second week in a row!
Let's Talk Television: My Ships Are Real
A good week for Hannah/Archer, Bradley/Cory, and EO, but an awful week for mental health.

I'm glad I have another of my usual* throat surgeries this week.

It is disconcerting to always be aware of one's breath. To feel the effort required on every inhale, every exhale. To feel the extra push needed to talk.

* no-one should have a "usual" surgery, to be clear.
