It’s me saying there’s a lot of folks out there who do view university as a class signifier rather than for the sake of learning so when they can cut corners, they will. And that’s perfectly aligned with the last 30-35 years of how higher ed has been built up.

But yeah like if you can’t bullshit a halfway decent research paper on a topic for the class, you probably shouldn’t be in the class. It’s just probably not the field for you.

And this isn’t me excusing the use of generative AI.

It’s about getting the piece of paper to add to your CV that will then get fed into job applications screened by AI. And they’re not incorrect for those thoughts!

But also that’s not the point of university. That’s simply what capitalism has made it. (With complicity from higher ed, I’ll add.)

Class / programme.

Ultimately AI being utilized by university students is because they realize a four year degree is a class marker before it says anything about competence these days. So they don’t feel any kind of way outsourcing their little brains to it. Cause it’s not about being interested.

I wrote both of my dissertations each in about two weeks. I got a worse mark on the second one cause it was August 2020 and I actually hate that department. But also, I was right and the GenAI hype continues to prove me right.

If you need AI to BS, you shouldn’t be in the class at all.

People think cause they can draw or commission art, they can just take that to a manufacturer and have it made. No flats, no understanding of textiles, no concept of how a manufacturer might interpret or misinterpret an illustration.

Genuinely I think the overseas (& foreign influencer in Japan) j-fashion communities have a massive problem with internalized misogyny when it comes to underestimating and devalue in the skills that go into making fashion and building a business around it.

But also if you don’t even have a basic knowledge of the industry, what hubris allows you to ask $500 for your first product?

Fashion design is a skill. Quite right. Some of us even went to school for it. If you didn’t, that’s fine. I can definitely argue that for fashion just apprenticing can be way more useful longterm, and I think 4-year degrees are kinda nonsense, as someone who has also hired in the industry.

That’s to say nothing of the changes from the concept art to the promised design, and apparently people are mad that they haven’t been as size inclusive as advertised.
