Scott Galloway a decade ago: "In the 60s our brightest minds put us on the Moon, now they're in Silicon Valley trying to optimize ad visibility to get you to maybe buy a car you have no interest in."

And we don't think about this as often as we should.

THIS.
Actually it’s worse.

You go through all this shite just to sit and stare at a 6 inch screen in your hand while your expensive 65 inch OLED plays some generic Netflix crap in the background.
Remember when you bought a Tv and plugged it in and it worked?

Now you have to agree to some bullshit T&Cs about spyware and AI, update the OS, use Wi-Fi, log in with an email account so it can track you across the web, provide voice samples so you can shout at it, and then pick up a book instead.

"Social media ruined empathy"

I think it did something worse: it gave us shallow empathy for complete strangers + reduced our actual empathy for the actual people in our actual lives.

Our grandparents: deep bonds with 10 people

Us: parasocial connections to 10,000 strangers

All too often, people living with dementia can become overwhelmed by the seeming cacophony. Sometimes, we can offer a focal point through our calm and reassurance. We can provide peace amid the storm.

From street marches to court battles to the ballot box - we’ve challenged the power of this exceptionally unpopular president.

The lesson from each success we've had is that we need to ramp the political pressure up, always up, not back down, now more than ever.

Every complex system is one black swan away from revealing it was duct tape all along. Supply chains, financial systems, social trust. It works until suddenly it extremely very much doesn't.

So, so true.
Grief is not a task to finish and move on, but an element of yourself - and an element of being.

"When you throw shit at other people, some always end up on you in the process." Advice I got from a wise lawyer long ago. I am reminding myself of it more and more these days, as the vicious circle of angry times and ease of insulting and demeaning others on social media is so tempting to join.

We’ve optimized for acceleration so hard that Be Here Now feels like a system error.

So neither Atlassian, which allegedly brings in $3.5B annual revenue and can afford to sponsor F1 Racing, nor Smartsheet, which was bought this year for $8.4B cash, seem to be able to handle an AWS outage. How much is everyone paying for these product subscriptions?
