they can address this easily by just making it consistent, or releasing a sample timetable of post Feb. but I'm worried they'll put off Watergardens getting a full 10 minute service all the time. for all the talk of superhubs and activity centres, why run trains empty past WeFo just to stable? (4/5)
mmbb.bsky.social
these aren't necessarily incompatible with each other (eg. some pre-6am/post-9pm trains run empty to/from west Footscray to stable in Calder Park/elsewhere), but why lead with West Footscray instead of Watergardens as the headline twice after the initial press release said Watergardens? (3/5)

possible interpretations of these 3 different official government channels today:

press release, no days specified, so:
1a) 6tph Watergardens - Dandenong, 6am-9pm M-F?
1b) 6tph Watergardens - Dandenong, 6am-9pm M-Su?

big build/JA post
2) 6 tph WeFo - Dandenong, M-Su, first to last (2/5)

so looking at the info released about the "big switch" on 1 Feb 2026, and we get 2 quite different headlines from this morning's press release, the big build website/a Jacinta Allan post on twitter at earlier tonight.

is it 6tph Watergardens - Dandenong, or just West Footscray - Dandenong? (1/5)
extract of press release which says "Trains will run at least every 10 minutes between Watergardens and Dandenong stations between 6:00am to 9:00pm through the Metro Tunnel." A screenshot of the big build page about the metro tunnel opening, which says "This increase in services means passengers from West Footscray to Dandenong will have a train at least every 10 minutes all day, every day of the week. Peak services will be on average every 3 to 4 minutes for passengers between Watergardens and Dandenong." A screenshot of a Jacinta Allan post on twitter which says "trains arriving at least every 10 minutes from first to last trains between West Footscray and Dandenong stations."

I don't know why the age didn't bother to include these quotes, but it's good to see my assumptions about ONRSR approvals being the last stumbling block vindicated.

but if the rewriting of the timetables isn't even done yet, you've got to wonder what the hell has been happening the last 4 years
screenshots of guardian articles about the new tunnels. screenshot reads: "Williams said the “most comprehensive re-timetabling of our network in living memory” was also under way to make way from the tunnel. She said this work made the project different to New South Wales’ Sydney Metro, which opened in August 2024.

“The Sydney Metro is effectively a shuttle. The Melbourne Metro tunnel is not,” she said. “It is integrated with the rest of our rail network, which means that when we timetable for the Metro Tunnel, we have to re-timetable virtually our entire rail network and, of course, connecting bus services and the like as well.” Allan said the next step was to get final approvals from the national rail safety regulator.

The Sydney Metro opening was delayed for a fortnight after it failed to receive its approvals in time. Allan said “we’ve learned from that” and would announce an opening date in due course.

“I appreciate there’s a hunger and eagerness to know the opening date and to know the timetable,” she said.
