Today on the Wedge LIVE podcast: St Paul Election 2025 w/ Matt Privratsky. Too few realize that St Paul has a question on the ballot that will decide whether they remain a Mad Max-style libertarian free for all - or adopt a civilized way to enforce society's rules (administrative citations).

I don't know when or how it will come, but there will be a moment when Trump's presidency is behind us and we're picking up the pieces of our democracy.

That can't be the first time we think about how we rebuild; that planning has to start now. Deep, structural court reform must be a part of it.

When the start of a new Supreme Court term fills you with dread 😱, it's time to fix the federal courts. Check out the report I wrote for @peoplesparity.bsky.social showing how the 100s of federal cases challenging Trump's illegal actions this year show the urgent need for court reform.

As a resident of Saint Paul, I’m grateful to be able to be able to get to most places in my personal and professional life in many ways that don’t require a car. As a policymaker in Saint Paul, it’s clear that we have a long way to go to build a community that is truly accessible for all of us.

But for the tens of thousands of people in Saint Paul for whom driving isn’t an option, it’s too hard to get where you need to go—to get to medical appointments, jobs that aren’t in the urban core, and more.

First, for a lot of us, taking public transportation (or biking, or walking, or rolling!) in the Twin Cities is easy, safe, and reliable. Our multimodal transportation ecosystem is far from perfect, but it’s better and significantly more usable than some would have you believe.

It would be absurdly impractical to do in a normal day. (The one upside of being furloughed from the federal government as of today is that David has a bit more time on his hands and can make it happen.) This morning encapsulates the two most important takeaways from #WeekWithoutDriving.

Leo has a weekly doctor’s appointment ~20 minutes away—by car. To get there without a car, David and Leo had to leave almost two hours early. They took a train, bus, and are now in the middle of a (very) long walk across suburban parking lots. They’ll have to do the same thing on the way back.

Day three of #WeekWithoutDriving. For me, the morning was easy: Green Line straight to downtown, very easy and completely uneventful. For the rest of my family, today is a different story.

My City Councilor! Leading by example, being a genuine roll-model.

Day 1 of #WeekWithoutDriving. Biked, trained, bussed. It’s easy to take public transit without thinking twice when I’m going downtown or places along the Green Line; today is a day when there were a few trips where I would usually have justified hopping in the car. Excited to be breaking bad habits!

👀👀 Very good to know.

We’ve been talking about getting one! We’re already a one-car household but I think for ease of errand running—especially with a baby in back—it would make it a lot easier to cut out unnecessary little car trips. I will say that the Burley does a nice job adding some storage capacity underneath!

But, until the state *does* step up (and we grow the tax base), this is—to my mind—the only option we have to give our kids the education they deserve.
mollycoleman.bsky.social
I hear that! It's also why we really need the state to step up. We've been being forced to do too much with too little since Pawlenty's attack on public education in 2003, and it isn't sustainable long term.
