The thing about Snezhnaya, is that if you fuck up, you die. This isn’t necessarily about the law or the Crown, but carved deeply into the very nature of the land, which then left its imprint on the people. There are many, varied, terrible fates awaiting one in the cruel, jagged cliffs of the North. Its people grow proud of surviving it, grow up seeing life as a privilege to be fought for, rather than merely the state of being. Dying is easy, anyone can do it. But living? Surviving? That takes effort. Talent. Recklessness, even. In Liyue, dying is a punishment, and sometimes a mercy. In Liyue, there is cruelty so carefully and meticulously doled out, that harm becomes measurable. There’s technique to it. Structure. It is monstrous in a way Childe’s never really thought about, before. “Childe,” Zhongli says, after a moment, when the silence lingers. It’s so new, their contract. It’s tender, like the first green tips of a tree in spring. Delicate. Decorum and courtesy and common sense all agree Childe should keep the sudden, burning vile behind her teeth. But he can’t. She won’t. “I hate it,” she says, no ounce of tact to it. “It’s awful and monstrous, and if you do it to your children, I will strangle you in your sleep.”

“The way I look at it,” they said, blue eyes fascinating like the depths of a bottomless pit, “you have to marry me, now that you’ve heard about it.” “Do I?” Zhongli asked, clearly entertained as he watched them reached out and pour more of that sweet wine onto their cups, much to the chagrin of the serving girl standing nearby, valiantly pretending she couldn’t see what her Mistress’ youngest child was doing. Or saying. “Obviously,” Childe said, grabbing their cup and clinking it with Zhongli’s. “Else you’re just willfully killing my would-be husband.” “I thought you wanted to marry the Emperor,” Zhongli went on, clearly entertained by Childe’s… everything, really. “Well, he’s the one with the most wives, right?” Childe said, shrugging. “So I reckon he wouldn’t even notice if I was or wasn’t there. And it’s my Mother who’d be delighted. Not many stable trade routes or anything, with you people. On account of the mountains, mostly. But!” They said, and looked at Zhongli with the vague hunger of a wolf sizing a lamb. “You’re a Duke, which means you also get to have lots of wives, yeah? Plus, you like me, and I bet you’re prettier than the Emperor anyway.” “The Son of the Heavens is second to none, Your Highness,” Zhongli replied, because it was the obvious thing to say, but he couldn’t quite hold back a small twitch at the corner of his mouth which Childe zeroed in on with zeal. “Besides, all of this plotting of yours is moot, should Her Excellency refuse.” “Sure, sure,” Childe said, “but there hasn’t been a thing yet I’ve asked my mother for, that she hasn’t given me.” They grinned, pearly white teeth sharp as they eyed Zhongli again. “Besides, after you wake up in my room, tomorrow, there won’t be much of a choice.”

By Ajax’s bedside Zhongli sat, changing his bandages, cleaning the puffy, red skin surrounding his wound. He wiped the sweat from Ajax’s brow with a cool, damp cloth, and took his hand when fever dreams disturbed his sleep, his moans of pain so subdued that Zhongli could believe Ajax were aiming to avoid inconveniencing him with his distress. For seven days and seven nights Zhongli remained by Ajax’s side, eating only the little that was supplied to him by an infrequent messenger. However, on the eighth day, Ajax let out a groan that was a little longer than usual, and his grip tightened around Zhongli’s hand. Finally, his eyelashes flickered, and his eyes opened, then narrowed. “Zhongli? What are you—?” His voice was raspy, and he broke off into a dry cough, slipping his hand away from Zhongli to grasp his chest. “You were injured in the battle. Here, please drink.” Zhongli poured a glass of water from the jug beside the bed and propped the pillows behind Ajax’s head to allow him to drink. Holding the glass to Ajax’s lips, he tilted it so that a light trickle fed into his parched mouth. Ajax groaned as his injured side shifted, but he drank eagerly, gulping down every last droplet before allowing Zhongli to lower him back down. As his head came to rest upon the waiting pillow, Ajax studied Zhongli, his gaze sharp and exposing, combing over every inch of Zhongli. The world narrowed, and there was no war, no lonely room at the back of the armoury, no bleak divide between weapon and human. There was only an injured warrior whose pain made Zhongli’s heart ache, and whose eyes made it beat impossibly faster. “You’re here,” said Ajax. “I am,” replied Zhongli. “Why?” Zhongli thought upon his answer. Technically he was there because the Emperor commanded that he be so; if the Emperor did not permit it, Zhongli would be cast far from these chambers to be left wondering upon Ajax’s condition. But had that occurred, Zhongli would have pled his case, begged to be allowed to remain, to tend to the brave warrior whose great strength saw no one else observing his own need for the tender care of a human hand. “Because I wish to,” Zhongli said, wiping a cool cloth against Ajax’s forehead. “And because I shall always wish to.”

A story in three parts. Watch out for this from topetegu dot Bluesky dot social. No doubt they got hacked. It’s a known scam.

B Nope TT I'm asking because I accidentally clicked on a suspicious link that was sent to me via DM. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a phishing scheme that compromised my account. My account was then used to target other users. I believed you were the one who sent me the link since you had the same profile picture, name, and similar @. After I managed to recover my account, I mistakenly reported your account for hacking and scamming me, as I couldn't identify the actual username of the person responsible. A dm exchange with Toptegu (TT) and Boozy (B): B Nope I don't share my account with anyone. People create clone accounts all the time of folks to try and phish. appreciate you letting me know but I'm not the guy you're looking for. TT I'm thinking that you got impersonated. do you happen to have Discord so l can forward you a screenshot of the account and l also got an email from bisky, and I want to show it to you. B I have a discord, I don't give it out. You can send me a telegram or email it to me TT toptegu that my discord i dont have telegram Final page of exchange: B I don't give out my discord.
