I think overall he's a good person and generally been a force for good, but he's shockingly simplistic and naive about some major aspects of his political thinking.

I've never understood why some people thought he'd be good in an elected position.

Quote is from Doctor Who, the Face of Evil (1977)

"You know, the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don't alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit their views. Which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that need altering."

That overlap is where science is anti-authoritarian

This doesn't diminish the suffering and death going on now and over the last year, but it will be what makes them suffer massive election defeats.

A year ago, most Americans had a negative opinion of immigrants and immigration. That could have been leveraged and maintained without much effort, but instead the Trump admin has reversed those numbers so that most Americans support immigration and immigrants.

Much of the damage to international relations could have been done while maintaining 50% or so approval. Same with a lot of their fascist agenda. They'd be a lot more successful if they had an ounce of intelligence, but instead they're rapidly turning the population against them.
January 17, 2026 at 9:22 PM
I think this wrongly assumes the clumsy stupidity of the Trump admin and consequences thereof are intentional. There's no reason to believe that and every reason to think they believe all this stuff will work just like they think lying about it will work.
January 17, 2026 at 9:22 PM
Agreed, but I suspect some think they need to respect their elders but also expect their elders to approve of their racism, so when that doesn't happen they get confused and don't know what to do. No idea what the breakdown looks like, and they'd probably do nothing to stop another one being violent

It would generally be impossible to know which ones you are going to be dealing with though.

It's probably true for some ICE agents.
January 17, 2026 at 9:06 PM
It's ridiculous. Clearly it's all for ME!
January 17, 2026 at 9:01 PM
The immense self-sabotaging arrogance and stupidity from this administration is impressive.
January 17, 2026 at 7:21 PM
How many people are going to needlessly suffer or die before people relearn the importance of vaccination, I wonder.
January 17, 2026 at 7:19 PM
The fact that they think this will work and that it won't help harden domestic opposition to Trump is quite unhinged.

It's sort of good that Trump and his goons have gone about everything in a stupid and clumsy way, because it is turning most people against them.
January 17, 2026 at 7:14 PM
On the one hand this is really bad for us, but on the other hand all this self-sabotage is helping to ensure the public continues to turn against Trump. That's the silver lining.
January 17, 2026 at 7:03 PM
They want to seize power, but they honestly do think all this is good for the country. Bigots always think that. And they're so stupid about how they're going about this that they're ensuring that they'll fail.

This isn't Russia. We don't have the same fatalism about oppressive governments.
January 17, 2026 at 6:59 PM
There's also bullshitting, and they're doing that too. It's not working.
January 17, 2026 at 6:52 PM
I think you're confusing the fact that they're idiots with desiring the current result. Trump is too much of a narcissist to actually want to turn people against him. He and his goons just thought they could do all this and lie to keep popular support.
January 17, 2026 at 6:51 PM
It's good that they're so clumsy and stupid, because they could do a lot of their fascist agenda without sabotaging their popular support of they weren't.

So much needless suffering though.
January 17, 2026 at 6:47 PM
They're honestly so stupid. If they were halfway intelligent they could do most of this and maintain most public support (sad to say). But they're incapable of it. They also stupidly sabotaged the economy and healthcare and think lying about it will somehow work.

The suffering is terrible though
January 17, 2026 at 12:49 AM
I realize this silver lining doesn't undo any of the harm that's been done, and things are going to get uglier too. It's just probably good that they're so stupid about everything or Trump could still have 50% approval.

Hopefully this particular move ends up being mostly hot air.
January 17, 2026 at 12:46 AM
On the other hand, the conflict is making the administration broadly unpopular and it's an election year; it's a bad move politically.

Tbh, even for their racist bigoted aims, they seem to have handled this whole thing in as ham-fisted a manner as possible. It has increased support for immigrants
