New paper out! An analysis of recent advances and challenges in tag miniaturization. I had a good time drawing Figure 3 (see below). Small things can help ensure the tagged animals recover fully!
How small can they go? Microelectronic tags for movement ecology of small aquatic organisms
Abstract. Miniaturization and optimization of batteries and electric components, as well as new technological innovations, are driving increased use of mic

Excited to share some new research!

In the Great Lakes, #ClimateChange is shifting fish migrations, spawning and peak movements are happening earlier across 16 species, both native and invasive!

PhD candidate Jessica Robichaud at Cooke lab at @carleton.ca is visiting us for a month to help with field work. Today, she presented her work for our lab. She is using acoustic telemetry to track permit in the Florida keys! So interesting to see some of her findings! 🐟

We recently tagged 444 Atlantic mackerel, with 182 (!!!!!) in one day! Couldn’t have done it without the MOST badass all-women surgery team 😎

Congratulations to Allyson Menzies for winning the 2024 Rachel Carson Prize in @peopleandnature.bsky.social! 🏆

Allyson’s research shows that fostering Indigenous values in environmental conservation requires better relationships with nature and each other.

New paper alert! 📢 Led by OTN's Robert Lennox, this paper explores how marine infrastructure (bridges, causeways, turbines, etc.) can impact fish movement. As coastal development grows, assessing & mitigating potential impacts is key. Learn more: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

New paper! 📣 Alosids such as alewife & blueback herring are vital connectors of freshwater & marine ecosystems, but their populations are in decline. This review highlights what we know (& what we still need to learn) about their ecology in the NW Atlantic: tinyurl.com/5a4f9xyn
