Have you ever seen a baby gar eating?

This little Spotted Gar is about a week old and has started feeding on zooplankton (in this case brine shrimp/Artemia/ aka "sea monkeys").

Atlantic killifish are robust little fish, but now @tblanchard.bsky.social & co reveal that fluctuating temperatures while the embryos are developing in the egg can have beneficial and damaging consequences

climate change is causing larger temperature variations BUT we know very little about how variable temperatures impact sensitive, developing fish

in this new study with @tblanchard.bsky.social & @trishschulte.bsky.social we found surprising impacts during development and after hatch!!

Thinking about all of my US colleagues today that work for USGS, USFWS, US Parks Service, NOAA and the EPA. From front line environmental practitioners to scientists and policy makers, these folks ensure that waters are swimmable, fish are edible, that natural areas are accessible, etc, etc, etc.

#sturgeonsaturday 🧪👩🏻‍🔬🌎🌐

the last 2 years i’ve been investigating why these giant fish are dying across BC

and i’ve started to identify the stressors that could be driving mortality!!

if you want to learn more, check out this video: tinyurl.com/4m4xxrkh

tldr; it’s getting hot out here yall 🥵

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

10 months ago I was working on the previous version of this controller 😄
hugoflavio.com
Something I really love about building stuff up is watching ideas come to life. Today: Upgrading our #respirometry pump controller so it can reset itself for a new trial. Little demo below.
A conceptual drawing of the message that should be displayed before triggering a reset. it reads "Resetting will make cycles return to F0. Proceed with reset?" And then the options "No" and "Yes" show up below. An LCD showing the same message text after it has been uploaded to the arduino board that powers the controller.

I am again improving my respirometry controllers in prep for an experiment 🐟

Today, I learned how to use one arduino to control any number of others!

This is a huge upgrade because now I can control _any number_ of flush pumps while using only 1 USB port on the computer.
A wooden tabletop with a white breadboard in the middle of the image (used to make simple wire connections between devices), two arduino nanos to the left, and one arduino uno to the right. The arduino uno controls the other two. The three boards have USB cables coming out of them, as all three are connected to a laptop for testing. In the final version, only the Uno will need to be connected to the computer.

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com

p.s. this week I am on a USA/Canada tour with my new book. Details and preorder links at tomgauld.com
Panel 1. image of a huge nuclear plant.
“Reactor Overheating”

2. A worker in a hazmat suit works at a computer. The screen reads:
“Press cancel to avoid critical overload”

3 - 9. The worker continues to type at the computer. The screen changes in each panel and reads:
“Enter password to confirm”
“Incorrect password”
“Incorrect password”
“Do you want to reset your password?”
“Reset link has been sent to your email”
“Please choose a new password”
“New password can't be the same as old password”
The colour gets hotter in each panel. Starting blue in 1 and ending in red in 9.

Panel 10. Wide view. The entire earth is blown up.

Earlier this year, @andyturko.bsky.social taught me how to use a 3D-printer. It's the most useful skill ever for experimental biologists!

Today, I decided to create a printables account to share my models with the world :) Only one simple model there for now, but more to come!

New paper out! An analysis of recent advances and challenges in tag miniaturization. I had a good time drawing Figure 3 (see below). Small things can help ensure the tagged animals recover fully!
How small can they go? Microelectronic tags for movement ecology of small aquatic organisms

This week we drove 4000km to collect giant floaters and tiny lake sturgeon and bring them back to Halifax. What a journey it was! Our new guests are now happy in their new homes 😊
A large freshwater mussel with the syphons facing the camera. The mussel is half-buried in sand, after choosing a good resting place. A young lake sturgeon swimming in a holding tank. The head is rather large compared to the rest of the body, as is normal in these early life stages.
