This was such a fun episode — thanks to the folks at IISG for inviting me back on the show (and to my fellow guests for letting me talk about the self-cloning crayfish we ALL wanted to discuss! 🦞🦞🦞)

Squeezed in a lil #SundayFishSketch. Panda corydora study, graphite and watercolors. 10mins.

Graphite and watercolor quick study of panda corydora by the artist Dhiyanah Hassan. The fish has a unique shape, kinda between an oval and a diamond from its side profile. It has the catfish whiskers near its mouth and black markings around its eyes and a black patch near its tail which give it its common name, panda corydora.

For #SundayFishSketch this week, an in-progress Coregonus kiyi. I’m working on an activity for the general public on why we use genetics to distinguish between species, and my current study system of ciscoes is more than a little notorious for being hard to morphologically ID reliably

I spent a couple hours last night in a white sucker consume talking to families about how they're not a "trash fish." Here's a quick sketch of a chonk for #SundayFishSketch

Not all fall-blooming flowers are to blame for seasonal allergies. If you're sneezing, ragweed and its airborne pollen are likely the culprit, but showy goldenrod blooms often get accused.

Have you ever seen a baby gar eating?

This little Spotted Gar is about a week old and has started feeding on zooplankton (in this case brine shrimp/Artemia/ aka "sea monkeys").

For harvest, the most harvested fish in Michigan is the Lake Whitefish. If you drive through the UP you’ll see lots of signage about places to purchase these guys either fresh or smoked. Unfortunately, they’re currently in decline #SundayFishSketch #SciArtSeptember

Bloodsucking parasite, but it’s a native fish!

Check out this native lamprey (compared to invasive Sea Lamprey) on a Northern Pike in a Minnesota River.

Parasitic lamprey species attached to hosts, rasp a hole and suck blood (but native species don’t typically cause death). Both fishes released!
