This week on Semi-Ramblomatic, @yahtzeecroshaw.bsky.social is taking a look at "cutscene incompetence" or how protagonists often seem to forget they're actually good at stuff during pivotal story moments.

Can't find out if Cloudflare is down because Cloudflare being down has taken out DownDetector, along with half the internet.

Last night I got to see The Offspring live. That’s one of my last early musical influences ticked off the bucket list. They put on a solid show, with an awesome setlist.

Plus, I got to see and hear them cover Hey Jude. It worked a lot better than you might have expect.

Thinking randomly about how society went from "People will literally pay money to have the phone play Crazy Frog every time someone calls" to "The average person's phone has been permanently on silent/vibrate since 2011"

People often push the disabled to take risks with our health.

They think if it’s already “that bad” who cares if it gets worse

We care.

Our baselines mean everything to us.

Whatever limited function we have left is always worth protecting.

You don’t get it until you get it.

I’m somewhat bemused and irritated by the number of large software or service providers that are surprised by the fact that users email addresses do sometimes need to change. And that said change inevitably ends up breaking things.

RPG logic I can get behind
"you succeed, but something explodes." is a great rule for both nat 1s and nat 20s in almost all contexts.

On a 1, the GM gets to decide what explodes. On a 20, the player does.

Conventional wisdom is that whenever there’s an obscure IT problem, the root cause is always DNS.

Today, the problem was not DNS. Today, the problem was expired certificates in really obscure places. Cue the grumbling.

It’s great to see Bluesky gaining momentum. People I know are migrating over, the theme park community seems to be establishing itself on here, and I’ve spotted some familiar names from Mastodon. Things are looking up.

I'm mostly lurking here for the time being, until Bluesky reaches critical mass. It's good to see it's getting there. In the meantime, I tend to read a lot more than I post, unless I have something to bring to a conversation, so don't expect to see much activity from me for the time being.
