Silent films and the silent era, same as the birdsite
THE CAT AND THE CANARY, a delightful old dark house mystery, included plenty of thrills. Tully Marshall falls victim to the classic murder mansion blunder-- never ever hesitate to say the name of the probable suspect!

My Greek baked beans are likely woefully inauthentic but are they yummy!

Reid was on the cusp of superstardom, which he achieved as the similarly stabby Don Jose in Cecil B. DeMille's 1915 version of CARMEN, so AT DAWN is not entirely casting against type.

The studio initially announced typecast heavy George Siegmann as the killer and Wallace Reid as the army lieutenant and this is found in all publicity material, indicating that the men swapped roles late in the game. It's for the best, multiple ladies swooning for Reid is much more believable.

I dig into the context of the film, shot just after the end of the Philippine-American War, the soldiers' immediate rejection of the racist murder defense, and how the film can be viewed as pro-US military propaganda but was nevertheless significant given the anti-Asian bias in the US

Reid openly confesses to the murder, showing the letter he has received from the heiress and proclaiming that the murdered woman didn't matter.

The soldiers do not agree and hang him.

When the US Army happens to wander by, they are immediately suspicious of his fixation with sitting on a corpse-hiding-sized trunk FOR NO REASON HE JUST LIKES IT OKAY

THE BEAUTIFUL UNKNOWN (1915) was part of Hollywood's brief craze for Balkan romances. Universal tended to skirt on the very edges of censorship, giving trade magazine readers an eyeful as a free sample

They want us to go back to theaters but do they offer us even one super-epic with a cast of Hungarians in beaded headdresses in dreams within dreams within dreams? They do not.

Here's Cain in MALE AND FEMALE (1919) making eyes at Julia Fay, his fiancee's personal maid (and she returns with interest)

Robert Cain fancies his odds in KIDNAPPED (1917).

Cain was never a major star but had an excellent run playing cads and scoundrels. Alan Breck was, of course, a rogue, which is is just the other side of the same coin.

I have most newsy terms muted (I don't like to get my news from social media) and this is my sole trending topic.

So, either the cat thing is going absolutely wild or something very, very bad happened.

I do not wish to be enlightened.

It’s actually well-written with clear instructions and helpful diagrams, it contextualizes the craft with historical examples

But I know what you freaks are here for
