If you think a game about going after the KKK would be controversial due to the current political climate, it's a good sign you should make a game about going after the KKK.

SCOOP: Last year, Ubisoft cancelled an Assassin's Creed game set during Reconstruction. Was to feature a Black Assassin who, among other things, fought the rise of the Klan

Sources: Leadership nixed it over concerns re: U.S. political climate, backlash to Yasuke

In his defense, magic is treated more like a tool or basic science than something whimsical in schools. College level courses is where it gets philosophical.

So he didn’t drop out of ✨🪄Magic School🪄✨, he dropped out of Normal School with a fun but dangerous art class.

I think at that he’d try to back out of the conversation with something like “It isn’t for them, it’s for me.”

As for the willingness to talk, the sentiment she showed would at least get on his good side enough for him to listen to more.

By this point in his story, Ash would probably quote one of his companions to her; “a lot of people would have killed for the opportunity I squandered.” It doesn’t help that his lack of education ties into some good old-fashioned daddy issues.

But this assumes he’d be willing to talk to a cop.

I mentioned the detective work before, so I’ll take today to say trying to write conspiracies to unravel in tabletop is fun, but chaotic. Watching them try and piece the clues together can be stressful, especially when they talk themselves out of the right answer.

It ties back to why his magic was so middling and why his knowledge of the world around him is so threadbare in the first book; He thought he knew all he needed, and he was wrong. He had typical teenage arrogance and a desire to strike out, and nobody to stop him. Years later, he’s paying for it.

He stayed out of the more cutthroat affairs of the gang he was part of and thought he was too good for politics, both internal and external. Now he has to dive into both, and his lack of study will prove to be a problem for him. Actually being responsible for people might be too much for him.

Putting aside indecisiveness, part of it was he was a lot lower on the ladder before. He was happy to just do burglary jobs for rich idiots for some spending money. After being forced to play for much higher stakes, now he wants to try and do something meaningful, and he doesn’t know how.

8. What are some potential reasons the main character(s) haven't, couldn't, and/or can't pursue these goals yet? Consider other characters, backstory events, circumstances, environmental factors, etc.

Then again I have less than 25 pages with this guy. Might be I can make things more apparent the further in I get. But now that I’ve noticed “oops I’m just making my oc again”, I’m worried I won’t be able to undo that.

Working on a modern day kinda urban fantasy story, and I’m realizing I’ve just made the protagonist my mentor NPC from some of my tabletop games. Didn’t even do that on purpose this time. I knew it was close, but I thought I could make enough differences beyond just the time and world to matter.

I had one use. Very late in the story, the crew has hit a dead end and is wondering what to do now. Doesn’t help that they’re on the clock.
“I don’t know…” I muttered. “Three possibilities. Worst case is the real path was blocked off by a cave-in. But nothing on this path suggested another route. Nothing visible, anyway.”

“So there might be a hidden passage?” Ginra chimed in. “That’s what I thought. Can’t find anything yet, though.”

“Yeah. Possibilities two and three are it’s either here, or we missed it and need to go back and look for something.”

“That could take too long.” Maxi groaned. “Any hints we can work with, acquisitions expert?”

“All the traps that were triggered were near the walls. Close to the lights. What would Locuti want to accomplish with that…?” I said, tapping my finger to my head. Suddenly I realized I knew how to get a better insight into this dungeon designer’s head. “Maxi! Did you bring the journal?”

Ages ago I took a course on the detective in fiction. One point that stood out was how close two radically different subgenres, the Whodunnit and Noir, were chronologically in their normal settings. The idea of a Holmes-type living to see the world go more gritty fascinated me.

Tell me about your work more grounded in the historical. What drew you to that setting? What things did you learn? #WritingPrompt

By the end of book 2? Probably not, unless I have some flash of inspiration this month. Maybe things will get better by the third.

The question is, who is saying this? The character or the author? (The answer is both.)

How much of his old life as a thief does he want to hold on to? How invested is he in the inner workings of a city that has given him a lot, but neglected him in other ways? How far is he willing to go for friends now that he actually has friends to take risks for? How much does he hate [redacted]?

Aside from the basic idea of “stopping someone from killing people I know”? Last book, a lot of people kept asking Ash what he wanted to do with his life. At the time, he was focused on just surviving to the end. Now he has some freedom to actually consider the question.

7. Now that you've come up with some goals for your main character, ask yourself: why do they care? What are some potential motivations for pursuing these goals, even against their better judgment or self-interest?

I’m going to have to think of a real pen name soon, aren’t I? Had request and an answer for one and I’m not entirely happy with it. I’ve seen some out there ones, but still.

Another rando chiming in. Can’t do much about the world being shot, but I’ll second/third/fourth what others have said; you don’t come off as a people pleaser, your work and efforts in this corner of Bluesky are appreciated, and I hope things get better soon.

“People have made jokes about old vampires with dentures. What about werewolves? Instead of sharp fangs, they have flat pearly whites. Would that stop lycanthropy?”

My train of thought during a lunch break writing exercise.

The later is partially a desire to help world at large, and also guilt at being partially involved in the events that destabilized the region around the city (the end of the first book). He was a bit player in the grand scheme of things, but he wants to try and be less of a selfish person.
