Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

Yep. Farage is terrible, but at least he's consistent. Everything he says (even the fake "man of the people" stuff) is of a piece with the golf club bore. God only knows what Jenrick is prepared to shapehift into.

If you're wondering why so many of my generation ended up with the eyes and ears and minds that we did it's because we could watch stuff like this on schools programme. This is simply astounding.

This whole thread is absolutely peak Bluesky. Dear Americans, not everything is about you.

Announcing this on a board where Americans are in the fight of their lives against a fascist takeover may be a pointer....

Take care, everyone. There's a lot of scenery out there today.
A narrow country lane with a backdrop of hills, trees and grassland under a clear blue sky in early autumn. (Box Hill, Surrey) Fields, hedgerows and a wooded hill with a small tower on the top, under a clear blue sky in early autumn (Leith Hill, Surrey, from the south)

Bollocks

(You know, the one with Kate Winslet where the big ocean liner hits an iceberg)

Saw a small patch of these this afternoon, and for a moment was wondering why someone had left all the apples from their picnic.
A large shiny red toadstool emerging from the scrubby grass on Banstead Heath.

I regularly fail to notice what my generation's cultural staples actually ARE, but yep, Friends and Love Actually. I think I saw one and a half of the original Star Wars films at some point. Didn't like Little Britain. I thought Metallica's black album was their worst at that point.

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

We made a windfall chutney last week (there's an orchard at the wildlife hospital where Nicola volunteers)... I'm not convinced about the recipe, which smelled more like piccalilli (a bit turmeric-heavy). Hoping it matures a bit in the jars!

Trying to imagine what might feature in a Reform UK buffet has put me off food for the rest of the day. Scotch eggs and Stella all round.

I did my annual pesto session a couple of weeks ago, although a couple of basil plants are still looking quite lush. Something very satisfying about sealing up a load of jars and knowing there's comfort food for the cold months.

It amazes me how many people don't do that. I've been walking past gardens absolutely blanketed in apples. Good for the wildlife, at least.

If I got my act together and planted seeds earlier, this wouldn't be happening (not would we be tortured by tantalisingly green tomatoes all through June). But every year, I have good intentions... until "oh shit, it's nearly April!" Fortunately we're in a very warm part of the country.

It's a bit blustery on the outskirts of Storm Amy, but still so mild. Just brought in another kilo of tomatoes (this is just four plants on the decking outside the back door). Not perfectly sweetly ripe, and several splitting, but we'll slow-roast them for pasta sauce.

Alongside her heroic portrayals of Kitty and others, Patricia Routledge was a great advocate for the arts, founding a song competition supporting young singers, and speaking movingly about her friend Janet Baker in the wonderful 'In Her Own Words' documentary. She just exuded integrity. RIP.

The famous guitar riff for Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child o' Mine" originated from a "circus melody" warm-up played by guitarist Slash during a 1986 jam session.
While Slash played the riff in a joking manner, bandmate Izzy Stradlin recognized its potential, and the band built the song around it.
