The US is pursuing "energy dominance" and forcing allies to buy US oil and gas. And, yet, China is beating the US on energy exports.

Surprised? Gift link: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Ah, thanks Jan - this is v helpful.

After a bit of reading, I get the general idea that doing this with the web platform in a PWA would be quite difficult. Every approach I can think of (I didn't spend long, to be fair), would require the centralised database or would monster battery.

Sad times :(
mrchrisadams.bsky.social
I’ve never used this. I’m a British person living in Germany. Is there a write up online of the specific features that make it impossible (or at least very difficult) to use as a PWA? It feels like it would be a good example why you might favour the web platform for projects like this if so.

This is amazing: @ladwp.com, the Los Angeles utility, has launched a program that will install solar+battery systems on qualifying low-to-moderate-income households, *for free*.

Yes: free.

If you know someone eligible, tell them to apply!
Self-Generation Incentive Program
The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) helps qualified LADWP residential customers install solar and battery storage systems by providing financial incentives. This program supports clean energy...

This is why we fund scientists to study things like oyster slobber even if you don’t think it sounds important

⚠️ Chinese researchers have invented bone glue that mimics how oysters stick to surfaces underwater.

The adhesive can reportedly repair orthopedic fractures in 2-3 minutes, even in blood-rich environments, and is bioabsorbable.

People signing the petition against the increase in parking charges in hammersmith and Fulham are signing a petition for the more than half of borough residents who do not own a car to subsidise the wealthier minority who do own a car to store it in the street. Don't believe me?
Ask yourself:
- Do people believe highways maintenance and parking management is magically free for the council?
- If not, how do they think it should be paid for?
- Out of council taxes, which we all pay, whether or not we own cars?
- Or is that people think all of these costs should somehow be recovered from drivers who live somewhere else other than Hammersmith and Fulham?
- Local authority revenue from parking can *only be spent on local transport costs*; maybe the people signing this petition would like to see much less spending on road maintenance in the borough? Less street sweeping, clearing up fly tipping, mending broken pavements and filling potholes?
It's all very unedifying to watch honestly and I hope you, dear reader, are not someone who believes you have a god given right to park your private property in the public realm in our crowded city, and that it is someone else's responsibility to foot the bill for making this possible.

That quote is from this piece:

www.cleanenergywire.org/news/german-...

It suggests otherwise.

If permitting batteries is easier? It should be, but I don't know if it is.

They seem like they would that be the most likely new dispatchable generation capacity we might see come online now, right?
German gas plant auctions unlikely to start before late 2026 – law firm
www.cleanenergywire.org
mrchrisadams.bsky.social
Then there's the whole issue of permitting too though:

"Holger Kreetz, chief operating officer (COO) at energy company Uniper, said that permitting and construction would take at least five years after the auction until a new plant starts feeding into the grid"

So that's like... 2030? 2031?

First there's the whole global turbine shortage in effect - I assumed Siemens might do a favour the german gov, but this quote suggests not:

“The tender for the 20 GW is supposed to happen quickly, but turbine manufacturers currently do not have 50 turbines in stock waiting to be picked up,”

Dear #energysky - I have a query about Germany's plans to build 20GW of gas turbine capacity in the coming years as described here.

www.cleanenergywire.org/news/germany...

Is it really plausible we'll see new gas on the main German grid before 2030?

Here's fig 5, showing the estimated costs for a 100% hourly matched carbon free portfolio for Germany and Poland respectively.

The Y-axis on chart doesn't even go beyond 130 EUR, and the cost increase is pretty gradual.

(there's much more to the topic, obvs, but for today, this made my day)
A set of 6 charts, showing cost carbon intensity of power under various scenarios in 2030 in Poland and Germany for commercial and industrial loads
mrchrisadams.bsky.social
My assumptions for hitting 100% fossil free (or carbon free if you prefer Google's terminology) power totally need to be updated after reading this paper. I assumed it would be really really expensive to decarbonise power in Germany as in hundreds of EUR per MWh for the last percent to reach 100%

$48 billion of LNG assets at risk of being stranded assets?

Sounds about right.

Investors are backing enough LNG tanker capacity to put the world on track for 4C of warming. This is when we're on track for 3C of warming and aiming for well below 2C. Investors are backing assets that'd be stranded even under the worst climate scenarios. www.businessgreen.com/news/4519373...

I reckon a fossil fuel being heavily promoted at climate week is a bad thing
Natural gas is making a quiet but highly placed comeback at Climate Week. At a number of events on Tuesday, senior officials made a case for gas as essential for energy security and a buttress to renewables. Anna Bjerde, managing director of operations at the World Bank, told a small group of reporters that the lender is agnostic about which technologies it helps finance to improve access to electricity around Africa. The main focus of that work has been on solar, she said, but “gas has to be discussed and pursued” for providing baseload power. “We should be leaning in to help countries develop gas.”

That view should get a warm reception from the Trump administration, which has reportedly been pressuring the World Bank to unwind its restrictions on financing oil and gas production. And it was a view echoed in a separate briefing at the Rockefeller Foundation offices by Daniel Chapo, president of Mozambique, who said he is working to expand the country’s large hydroelectric dam while also pursuing gas production deals with Western drilling companies, and hopes to use more of that gas for domestic power plants.

In the evening, between glasses of prosecco and mini lobster rolls at a reception in a high-end Times Square hotel, Ditte Juul Jørgensen, director-general for energy at the European Commission, took the podium alongside Toby Rice, CEO of major US gas producer EQT, and lauded the security benefits of LNG. “The energy war in Ukraine has come to redefine our strategy of independence,” she said. “The energy transition will continue to be our path, but we will need gas for many years to come.”

Why are the American president's claims about autism the first item on British news bulletins?

He's not our president, the advice doesn't apply here and he's not presented any evidence to support his assertions.

So why spread these claims? What make this the biggest story in the UK?

The truth: we need migration.

The problem: too many politicians are terrified to say it.

Why? They're led by a) toxicity of the charlatans & b) wealthy media organisations who demand these useful distractions rather than us talking about inequality.

Reject it. Draw the line.

I think there's something interesting in the combination of these two charts. The US is just barely a net exporter of fossil fuels, and also a relatively high cost oil producer. What happens to the politics of oil in the US if global demand & prices drop, but domestic demand doesn't? #EnergySky
