In terms of US politics, Bush v. Gore is the defining event of the century. It set the template: a ruthless right that instinctively seeks power & doesn't give a shit about rule of law...and a bunch of hapless, feckless octogenarian Dems worried about the good opinion of centrist opinion columnists.
The 25th anniversary of Bush v Gore is today. The conspiracy mongering & corruption of the GOP has been brewing for a long time.

Roberts, Barrett and Kavanaugh were all on Bush's legal team, where they pushed unfounded legal theories. SC justices were already enmeshed in voter fraud myths.
Here's Sandra Day O'Connor endorsing News Max levels of voter fraud conspiracies in the 2000 election.

I have worked in/ volunteered with/ and studied the disaster nonprofit sector for the past 19 years -- big fan!

However, the notion that any disaster nonprofit (and my god, especially any of the Cajun Navy related groups) could do even a fraction of what FEMA does is delusional.
The Cajun Navy started after Katrina as volunteer boaters conducted rescues on the fly. Despite legal trouble, scandals and infighting, it's still going. And some leaders say they've been advising Trump officials on FEMA + the US disaster system. Gift link: www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
The Cajun Navy Is Shaping Trump's Vision for US Disaster Relief
While the Trump administration rethinks federal disaster relief, Republicans have praised how Cajun Navy groups have responded to major storms.

I profoundly hate the world we've built.
Victim-blaming knows no bounds. I just saw someone blame a 70-year-old pedestrian for getting fatally struck by a car because he “should have been paying attention”

When I tell people that we have criminal evictions in Arkansas, they look at me like I have antennas. But we do. It's a shamelessly cruel place, and that's my theory on why our electeds are on TV defending murder.

More and more research is showing that in the US, extreme weather exacerbates quality of life disparities more than anyone previously was accounting for. It’s going to get worse.
"Our analysis shows that in the aftermath of extreme weather events, lower-income neighbourhoods are less likely to rebuild and do not return to their pre-disaster state, whereas higher-income areas rebuild and tend to improve...highlighting increasing disparities in their built environments."

I don't know exactly how the new birthright citizenship case will come out, but I'd note that if it eviscerates §1 of the 14th Amendment, the remedy of "just pass a constitutional amendment" wouldn't apply. The 14th is already there.

The sole public remedy would be to reform the Supreme Court.

insane local news just dropped. i've lived in a part of KC for ~decade and it's been an inside joke with friends and service workers that the local biz/party district is ran by a cartel of biz owners who bully out new ventures and replace them with generic dive bars for white suburbanites.

Well UH

He thinks a wealth tax is bad, but destroying all the earthly possessions of unhoused communities is his personal duty as Governor of California. I do not like this man.
Gov. @gavinnewsom says he disagrees with Mayor @zohrankmamdani about the need for a wealth tax on billionaires, which he is “adamantly against” - says Dems are a “big tent party” with both views.

A perusal of today's Moscow papers leave no doubt as to Putin's objective with the 28-point plan. It's not peace in Ukraine. It is to drive a wedge between the US and its European allies and NATO.
