"Some Hollywood actors played up in my pub last night."
"Have ya barred 'em?"
"No, but his wife, Penelope Cruz was there."

Isn't that just "a meeting"?

Apparently it's some kind of passive benefit where crimers won't do criming if they know people can see them, and passers-by will be reassured by this.

Reminds me of this excellent sign that I saw at the Tubman African American Museum in Macon, Georgia.
Piano, which once belonged to Little Richard, with a sign on it saying "Do not attempt to play Little Richard's piano. He will know."

I mean really we should be paying the hotel for their munificence.

I think the most ludicrous one I've heard recently was using it as an argument against pedestrianization because if the street is full of cars, the people in the cars provide "surveillance".

Bench in a public space: disorderly, anti-social, probably being sat on by drunks and loud teenagers. Bench behind a nice fence with "respectable" people spending money: safety, "eyes on the street", reassuring, beneficial to the public realm.

What's sad is the "antisocial behaviour" itch is a strong one with some local authorities and other bodies e.g. it's used to justify closing permeability between housing estates etc (more driving instead, cool!). So it might get traction.

We don't want to make Nick Clegg sad, do we? So lets all join hands and walk into the ocean and admit that the era of human creativity has come to an end.

"It it would improve the public
realm by promoting the principles of natural surveillance “eyes on the street” and instil a sense of safety
for people using the streets adjacent to the recessed colonnade throughout the day"

I just looked at their application and they are making the dubious claim that Liffey Street is awash with anti-social behaviour and having their guests sitting in the fenced off area is a safety enhancement. 🙄

Aerial Cirque! A woman in work who goes there organized it!

DON'T DIE MARY (also I am going to an introductory aerial class tomorrow, so both thought of you and suspect I might die myself)

"We have concluded that enormous trucks going past your house are a natural phenomenon, like the weather"

(also unsurprisingly much more sensible - if exasperated - reaction from @karlstanley.bsky.social)

The response from the traffic engineer in this is infuriating. "Sorry, yeah, but all that traffic needs to go somewhere so it might as well be on your very narrow road. Sadface."

Ooh, must go, I love Ethiopian food. Including the delicious edible facecloth pancake thing.

I still occasionally have nightmares about having to hand in a thesis, usually featuring me realizing just before it's due that I don't really have a topic.

(was discussing this this morning with Mr L, who also found second year a bit of a wall but then mocked me because my feeble arts wall did not involve "spending hours on end turning brain inside out trying to understand quantum mechanics")

Also had a bit of a Come To Jesus moment via second year exams and the realization that my time-honoured tactic of "last minute cram, hope native cunning will carry me through" that had worked since primary school ... did not work.

I was kind of a little from column a, a little from column b, I definitely worked much harder in third and fourth year than first year ("ooh I'm in college") and second year ("pints? pints!").

I work in IT and literally use the skills I developed in my English and History degrees daily: organising information, researching, assessing critically, making arguments, explaining things clearly.

English and History here, but otherwise same, and same.
