We're firmly into autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, so it's once again time to share one of my favourite chemistry infographics on the kaleidoscope of chemical colours found in autumn leaves! 🍂

Infographic on the chemistry of the colours of autumn leaves. Green is caused by chlorophyll, carotenoids and flavonoids give yellows, and oranges come from carotenoids, which also contribute to reds along with anthocyanins.

Repeating to link to the Secondary metabolism channel - Anyone have any literature on how yeast or other fungi detect plant phytohormones or other compounds? I am struggling with the search terms to find the genes that allow fungi to respond to plant compounds. #secmet #natprod

On the way to work. Re-thinking every life choice.

A Sparrowhawk pauses mid-stride along a branch, one talon lifted and head tilted down, its intense yellow eyes fixed on the ground…the very picture of someone trudging to work while internally rethinking every choice they’ve ever made.

Reminder: Nobel-prize winning PCR (1983), used in basically all genetic tech today, was only possible because of extremophile bacterium discovered in 1964 in Yellowstone funded by a small ~$80k NSF grant with no obvious application at the time. #science 🧪

My interview with @wheatpath.bsky.social on this case of "agro terrorism" opens tonight's Science in Action. TL/DR: the fungus is widespread already in the US; it's treatable; it's not even on the international watchlist.
And research on it is important for farming.
