wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.

This sounds like something tool-specific. I believe in Gimp, for example, saving to an image format is equivalent to export, but by default it saves to a file like xcf

I think a lot of the current "Social Media makes you miserable" stuff comes from people who don't use SM to be social. They use it to consume. And then they don't consume socially either. They use some kind of algorithmic feed to show content by people they don't know saying god knows what.
