Not all those who wander are lost.

~ J. R. R. Tolkien
Got lost looking for a slightly obscure museum in Tangier but worth it for this encounter with a pissed off cat hiding among the plants.

Tonally the film hits harder a few years down the line.

“There are still faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity... He was one of them.” #filmsky

Great to see The Grand Budapest Hotel at the BFI this evening as part of their costume design strand this evening. And indeed the costumes are among the most exquisitely crafted you will ever see in any film. #filmsky

Saw Moon at the BFI this evening as part of their costume season. Extraordinary to think the budget for costumes was just 8k. #filmsky

The Voice of Hind Rajab
- a harrowing plea for humanity that’s also a technically impressive example of single location shooting. 9/10 #filmsky

A real treat to see the 35mm print of Withnail & I at the BFI earlier today. The wildly entertaining q&a with Richard E Grant hosted by Will Arnett that followed was the cherry on top. #filmsky

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple - while it lacks the audacity of it’s predecessor, Bone Temple deftly weaves together two very different narrative strands (one brutal and one philosophical) in a very satisfying way. The interplay between Kelson and Jimmy Crystal is just superb. 9/10 #filmsky

Hamnet - while at times the film would have benefited from a slightly tighter focus, Jess Buckley gives one of the performances for the ages here and the film’s coup de grâce continues this years cinematic theme of art as a healing force in a powerful and profoundly moving way. 9/10. #filmsky

A thread for new films I see in the cinema in 2026. Starting with….

Sentimental Value - a still river running deep in its exploration of artistic expression and personal connection, and how these intersect. Packed full of terrific performances, with Renate Reinsvethe the stand out. 10/10. #filmsky

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery - there’s a lot of fun to be had with the all star cast and big dramatic speeches, but the moment that really sticks is a small moment, in the form of a phone call, which starts as a joke, but transforms in to something profoundly touching. #filmsky

Sorry, Baby - in this remarkable assured directorial debut by Eva Victor, much of Agnes’ trauma goes largely unspoken but lives large, but one beautiful scene involving a sandwich and a gruffly kind stranger provides a small but lingering light of hope through the piece #filmsky

The Long Walk - perhaps the most harrowing film of the year, in which its central point is made almost TOO well. It’s sense of hopelessness is encapsulated by Hanks
tragic pronouncement that “I did it all wrong!" as the others are forced to keep walking. #filmsky

Black Bag - one of the hidden gems of the year, Black Bag succeeds in reinvigorating the rather stale spy thriller genera, never more so than in the highly memorable and intense opening dinner party that serves as a psychological game through which we are introduced to the key characters. #filmsky

28 Years Later - the film as a whole is a visual treat, and gleefully provided the most contentious ending of the year, but it’s the poignant and sensitive “memento mori” scene that lingers longest in the mind and illustrates well why these films are far more about humanity than horror. #filmsky

Book club book of the month was The Safekeep, in which the tension simmers away beautifully in the first half of the novel but really kick up a gear when we finally get to the bottom of the dark secret at the stories heart. An incredibly impressive debut novel. 9/10. #booksky
