I'm no painter—still, there was no better way to conclude Stand Up for Science Day than by painting an Aspergillus conidiophore while sipping dirty matchas in honor of those working to protect us from fungal diseases.

This morning at Dept of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) HQ in DC as mandatory return to office began, this video played on loop for ~5 mins on screens throughout the building, per agency source.

Building staff couldn’t figure out how to turn it off so sent people to every floor to unplug TVs.

A whole generation of early career scientists and physician-scientists, including colleagues and myself, are particularly vulnerable to these funding freezes and cuts, with jobs and careers depending on federal grants.

It is often said that every disaster movie starts with a scientist being ignored. The current one has started with tens of thousands of scientists being ignored by the U.S. government, delivering us to a place where “science” is whatever information supports a person’s already entrenched beliefs.

Is this the break the glass moment for university administrators who have been silent so far about the attack on science?

Every single professional organization in the country should be speaking out about the news about NCMEC. The administration put a financial gun to the heads of people trying to save children from kidnapping and trafficking demanding they enact policies that will hurt lgbtq kids. That is beyond evil.

NEW — I spoke to a staffer at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) about DOJ's threat to pull funding if the org didn't comply with Trump's DEI executive order, and how org leadership rolled over.

"Rather than fight back, we chose to sacrifice trans children," they said.

I wish we could reach the average American and let them know that with Trump’s cuts to the NSF, NIH, and CDC, they will no longer have access to cutting-edge medicine. U.S. physicians won’t have access to new technology. New cancer treatments will be available in other countries but not to them.
