And good on ya for wanting to engage with the newer, weirder crop of gamers. There very much is still a place for our old dungeon crawls and crunchy dice, but it's also got a lot more options for Monty Python shenanigans.

It can be, aye. I also favor lower powers, small stakes adventures earlier on. But there is something I love about Tieflings and Dragonborn just... Running a used bookshop.

And I dunno about you, but I totally gamed with folk back in the day who wanted hyper powered super special godspawn PCs!

Forgotten Realms is still pretty much unchanged, setting wise. But Critical Role is definitely different from AD&D's Grayhawk and such. And CR is its own thing in many ways, not just a D&D game.

Even the stuff that isn't quite for me, I really enjoy watching other people responding very fondly to.

No lie, I kinda felt the same way for a while. But sitting at the table and seeing the absolute joy players have walking around as hippos with blackpowder guns, it's a different niche of fantasy and it appeals to a lot of different players. Less like Middle Earth, more Wizard of Oz and I love that.

Another feature of this DM's style is magic as technology. Magical spotlights for a burlesque show, levitating rocks for airships, a demon helped invent gunpowder. Really just all reasons to add that every day magic in the high fantasy setting.

There are a lot more fantasy races than there were in the old PHB, that's for sure. Tiger folk, elephant folk, pretty sure you can play a literal fish.

As for the crock-pot of setting material: Speaking from my experience, the DM throws in whatever is fun for them!

It's definitely memorable next to other dialogue from that movie. The last scenes with Anakin and Obi-Wan had some bad 90s comic book level lines.

But that quiet scene with Palpatine and Anakin, with the Tuvan throat singing opera in the background... Deeply sinister and good storytelling.

No way! Is this a longtime rumour?! First I've heard of it!
