Western Meadowlarks are another one of those first-in/last-out birds. Their arrival in April is the herald of spring and their departure in late Sep/early Oct is… a little sad TBH 🥺 #birds
A slim, brown bird with light eyebrow, long pinks legs and a sharp beak is perched in profile on a worn wooden fence post with a bit of orange lichen on it.

A beautiful young Laughing gull calling. Probably not actually laughing given that its incessant calls for food went unanswered. Chasing mom around didn't help either. I think her message was, you can feed yourself now!

🪶 Alan has chosen #Migration (Alternate #floofball) for today’s #BirdOfTheDay.
Migration is a big part of bird life on the west coast of Ireland; here’s a Buff-breasted Sandpiper I found on a headland last winter.

Regent Bowerbird. Lamington NP, Australia.

They are known to mix a muddy grey-blue or pea green saliva paint in their mouths, which they use to decorate their bowers. The bower consists of two walls of sticks, decorated with shells, seeds, leaves and berries.

BirdNET embeddings can identify new sound classes beyond its training set, aiding invasive species monitoring, biodiversity surveys, and detecting threatened species across vertebrate groups while requiring minimal call examples and manual validation.

"The horrors persist, yet still I dance... and I meep."

Alcohol ink markers & pen on vellum. Despite my anger, anxiety, & grief, I'll keep doing the things that bring my life joy & meaning. I hope you do too.

Don't give up hope.

An illustration of a goofy-looking bird called the American woodcock. The phrase, "The horrors persist, yet still I dance... and I meep." is printed around the bird; this is a reference to their funky dance and distinctive call, as well as a gentle if silly reminder for us humans to not give up our hope/joy.

The nuthatch. One of my favorites too. Our local nuthatches are so chill at the feeders. I love their preferred perspective on the world.
