I met my friend Priya running into her a few times in the elevator. We hung out, shared our stories of leaving abuse, and her story is just… astounding.

She’s written a book on it, out now!

Their photos hang on walls, their voices fill television screens and their names are spoken in both prayers and scandals. But the word ‘cult’ is rarely used. It stays unspoken until another scandal breaks out, only to be buried under silence again. This silence allows blind faith to thrive and logic to crumble. At nine, Priyamvada Mehra was led into the fold of Rampal, a self-proclaimed godman who promised miracle cures and salvation in exchange for submission. What began as her parents' desperate attempt to save her mother’s life soon became something far more sinister—a world where faith became a cage, obedience a virtue and control, absolute. By thirteen, Priyamvada was a devoted follower. In 2006, she was inside his ashram, used as a human shield during a deadly clash between Rampal’s followers and a rival sect. Deeply intersectional in its lens, it lays bare the psychological and physical toll of being led into blind faith as a girl and the long journey of dissenting as a woman in a ‘man’s world’. This is my will, my last message. If these words reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice. First, peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you. God knows I gave all my effort and strength to be a support and voice for my people, ever since l opened my eyes to life in the alleys and streets of Jabalia Refugee Camp. My hope was that God would grant me life to return with my family and loved ones to our original town, Asqalan (Al-Majdal) — the occupied — but God's will was earlier, and His judgment is final. I lived pain in all its details, tasted bitterness and loss many times, and yet I never hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without falsification or distortion, hoping that God will be witness over those who remained silent, those who accepted our killing, those who besieged our breaths and whose hearts did not move at the sight of the torn bodies of our children and women, and who did not stop the massacre our people have been exposed to for more than a year and a half. I entrust you with Palestine, the jewel of the crown of Muslims, and the heartbeat of every free person in this world. I entrust you with its people, and its oppressed little children, who were not granted the time to dream or live in safety and peace. Their pure bodies were crushed by thousands of tons of Israeli bombs and rockets, torn apart, and their remains scattered on the walls. I entrust you not to be silenced by chains, nor confined by borders, and to be bridges toward liberating the land and its people, until the sun of dignity and freedom rises over our stolen land. I entrust you with my family in goodness. I entrust you with the apple of my eye, my beloved daughter Sham, whom time did not allow me to see grow as I dreamed. And I entrust you with my dear son Salah, whom I wished to be a support and companion on the path until he grows strong, carrying my worries and completing the message. I entrust you with my beloved mother, whose blessed prayers enabled me to reach what I have reached, and whose prayers were my fortress and whose light was my path. I pray that God strengthens her heart and rewards her generously on my behalf. I also entrust you with my life partner, my beloved wife Umm Salah Bayan, whom the war separated from me for many long days and months, but she remained faithful to the promise, firm as an olive tree trunk that does not bend, patient and accepting, carrying the trust during my absence with all strength and faith. I entrust you to gather around them and be their support after God Almighty. If I die, I die steadfast on principle, and I bear witness to God that I am content with His decree, believing in meeting Him, and certain that what is with God is better and everlasting. O Allah, accept me among the martyrs, forgive me my past and future sins, and make my blood a light that illuminates the path of freedom for my people and family. Forgive me if I have fallen short, and pray for me mercy, for I have remained true to the promise and have neither changed nor altered. Do not forget Gaza... And do not forget me in your sincere prayers for forgiveness and acceptance.
