It's spooky season which means we have a new cosmic horror novel! This is like if Barb Wire was dropped into a Lovecraftian story, set in Kingsport after the apocalypse. If you like Fallout, Cyberpunk, or Lovecraft, with more sex? This is for you.

The cover for Kingsport Knockout by J.M. Keep. Features a 3d female model with dark hair that blows majestically behind her as she stares off with a defiant but neutral expression. She's wearing a tanktop and ripped jeans, and has some jewels shimmering on her body. Behind her is a ruins on fire with strange runic symbols glowing in the air.

I hope it leads somewhere positive. In my experience, therapy makes things worse before they get better. Take a lot of time for yourself after.

So not a car guy... but I could be: if this were the car I had.

“It’s not worth getting in touch with my people... I’ll pass on an illness to them,” he said. “I am no longer that person from the forest.”

From an isolated Amazonian tribe, he saw half his family die from disease upon contact with us. Separated from siblings he was enslaved as a boy. Civilization.
Uncontacted Amazon people should be left alone, survivor says, describing leaving ailing father to die over grave
Atxu Marima survived the flu that killed his family after a jaguar attack drove them from their Indigenous group in the Amazon -- but he cannot return for fear of endangering his people.

where do people like this think creativity happens? it happens IN the transitions, it happens in navigating through all the difficult bits; the pleasure of creating is inextricable from the difficulty, it's all one cloth. you deliberately conflate that with rote productivity then you have no soul

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

I thought of this last night. I liked the movie, but cheaping out on those few posters has tainted my memory of it.

Canada and the US have been so insulated from land invasions that I don't think we've really absorbed what war looks like and how life goes on. We think of WW2 armament factories and working in clean and 'safe' places, not cowering from bombs as we struggle to make rent.
jmkeep.bsky.social
I honestly think a bigger point needs to be made in high school history classes that people still had to work during invasions. People had to work during the London Blitz. People still have to work in Ukraine. Taxes often go up during war and the people pay for that.

"It's innevitable."

"Adapt or die."

"Embrace it or get left behind."

"The genie is out of the bottle."

"It'll get better, just wait."

"This is the worst it will ever be."

These things are said to get you to believe/fear you don't have agency to resist, question & criticize.

Please everyone buy my latest book which is all about this problem and how we can fix it. It has, of course, been ignored by the mainstream press.

people on here apparently need to learn a lesson most of us learn in elementary school, which is that it’s fucking rude to correct people on zero stakes things and doing so leads rightfully to social ostracism

We have a new horror novel coming out this month! #WIPSnips for prison rather than dungeon.

#booksky #horrorsky

From Kingsport Knockout, which is like Barb Wire meets Lovecraft.

She was safe. The sun had set, the only light the familiar yellow of a candle.
No more wild colours beyond reason.
No more stink of death.
No more hallucinations of living rugs and monstrous old men.
She had to return to Rashid.
He had to be so worried about her disappearance. Perhaps even angry! She had only intended to be gone for a few hours, and despite the small size of the village, every town was different at night.
One of the starkest realities of the apocalypse was how dark the nights could truly be.
“I have to go.”
She tried to push herself up and felt the tug of bindings wrapped around her wrists. The comforter weighed her down, the heavy fabric oppressive rather than soothing. She was bundled up tight like a child on a winter eve, tucked into a luxurious bed.
A luxurious, homey prison.

Americans live in such a delusional fantasy land, where they've convinced themselves that China is going to launch some war of aggressive conquest out of the blue. A wild assumption based on nothing, certainly not history. Just their paranoia from drinking their own propaganda koolaid.

That Blender is free is pretty well communicated. But also most paid addons the community makes are outrageously inexpensive. There's always some wiz kid with like, a one-click infinitely variable scifi cityscapes generator - $15 (or whatever you think is fair), commercial use, free updates forever.

Kinda funny to think you'd grab a suspension from this place if you quoted the guy that went on to be the Premier of NL.

We just finished up a meeting with Bethesda where we got to design a character for The Elder Scrolls 6. Honestly, a lot of us went into the meeting pretty nervous and even reserved, but now we're all extremely excited for what's in store.

A green plant with three leaves on each stem with little points along the edges.

Jason Blum's take on AI sucks. an AI takeover isn't inevitable, and treating it as such (while also referring to filmmaking as "content creation," smdh) helps AI companies promote the lie that their deeply unprofitable, destructive tech is more powerful and useful than it actually is.
