Probably posting a lot of retro video game things
One surprise for me in 2025 is that it feels like most of the online services and software I use have gotten worse. A notable exception is @kagi.com. This is a service I gladly pay for and has measurably improved throughout 2025. If you are frustrated with search, you have to try it.

Despite everything, I really do think computers are fun and useful.

What’s one feature or attribute you hear about in a video game that you know is an immediate turn off for you? For me, “deck builder.”

One fun thing about learning how to solder is now I can fix stuff that before would have meant sending something in for service. A kid dropped my Steam Deck and broke the left bumper button. I ordered a replacement button for €7, desoldered the broken one, soldered on the new, and it works great!

Just got my “for parts, untested” Game Boy Pocket. All ready to build @nataliethenerd.com’s Build A Boy (buildaboy.co) when it is ready!

A few weeks ago I ordered a long male to male SCART cable off Amazon so I could tidy up my retro setup a little bit. It was awful. The image was garbage. So much noise. I returned it and ordered the same length cable from @retro-access.com and the image is gorgeous. You get what you pay for, folks.

If you like old video games, emulation, or translation projects and aren’t subscribed to Read Only Memo, why aren’t you subscribed to Read Only Memo?

My Analogue Pocket’s D-Pad has always bothered me. I could never seem to get good diagonal movement and it felt unresponsive. So I used a DMG game boy D-Pad, some small round stickers, and blue tack to fix it. While at it, I replaced the buttons with clear ones. Works great now!

For #randomgamesaturday I have Silent Hill. Despite living in Europe, this one’s an NTSC copy. It was one of those times where someone was trying to offload their American copy of the game and it was cheaper than the going rate for a PAL version. My other two Silent Hill games (2 & 3) are PAL.

If anyone is interested in trying @kagi.com for free for 3 months, let me know. I am not exaggerating when I say that Kagi has fixed everything that is wrong with search on the Internet today and is worth every single penny.

I did not realize there was an Everdrive 64 software update specifically for the Analogue 3D. Now all of my dumped games work great in Unleashed overlocking mode and I have no issues with saves anymore. I had always been bummed by MegaMan 64 compared to the PS1 version and now it runs just as good.

Some people want sports cars when they retire. All I want is an Aiwa Mega CD boombox

I’ve only had a little time to play it but I have to say I am very impressed with the Analogue 3D and can see me using it a lot. I have an original N64 (RGB modded) connected to a CRT and a MiSTer with the N64 core but the Analogue 3D really feels like an enhancement of that original experience.

I had high hopes for the Nintendo Switch 2 as a physical game collector. I never owned a PS5 and was looking forward to getting Switch 2 physical copies of a bunch of multiplat games that I missed (FFVII R, Elden Ring, maybe Armored Core VI?) but Game Key Cards have made that a huge disappointment.

Recently finished Popful Mail for the Sega CD. What a delightfully fun game. It’s really a shame that an English localization is so inaccessible to most people. It definitely has that Working Designs artificially dialed up difficulty but I really enjoyed it nonetheless.

I finally have 100% completed my @cosam-the-great.bsky.social Sega Neptune build. I got an excellent 3D print of DVIZIX’s shell and some decals. I’m really happy with how this turned out and it is really fun playing on a Sega console that I built. Def got some childhood wish fulfillment going here.
