Even a significant portion of the Trump base gets weird about the files, plus maybe they just see the inevitability writing-on-the-wall of it and are banking it'll be out before the primary and they can leverage it then or more long-term

I think one thing that's stark about it is that, unlike most of the awful things Trump and his ilk do, is that they actually are covering this up. Which suggests even they don't think they can survive it.
