With today's 2035 emissions reduction target announcement, it is a good time to remind everyone that @climatecouncil.org.au has long argued that, in order for Australia to act in line with the Paris Agreement, we should be aiming for net zero by 2035. www.climatecouncil.org.au/resources/wh...

With a 2035 emissions reduction target of 62-70%, I think we can say Ketan called it.👇

Australia's going to release its 2035 target today....here's my prediction. Going off remarks, rumours and murmurings it might end up with a much lower actual target (in the low 60s), with an even more egregious aesthetic 'range' to make it sound more ambitious

PREDICTION

- Australia's 2035 target will be 65% by 2035

- It'll be presented with a range, "65% - 68%", to make it sound higher, despite that still being a 65% target

- the gov't won't exclude dodgy, constantly revised land use data

- no exit plans for coal and gas export

Massive Free Palestine rally in Naarm today - the front was already at Flinders Street before the union contingent had even left State Library. Proud to join and march with NTEU comrades for an end to the two-way arms trade, genocide, ethnic cleansing and occupation. ✊🇵🇸

Thanks Tim - it was somewhat frustrating seeing how overblown this all was, so I figured I'd offer some grounded analysis

Some particular highlights of #IPSA2025 were chairing an excellent panel on climate change and the state, hearing Professor Donatella della Porta's plenary address on academic freedom, and finding a potential publisher for a book based on my PhD thesis - stay tuned for more on that!

It was an incredible privilege to join over 3,300 peers last week at the largest ever International Political Science Association (IPSA) World Congress in Seoul.

Thanks to all who helped organise the conference, shared their work and came to hear about and offer feedback on my own.

Welcome to Seoul, #IPSA2025 participants! 🎉
We’re thrilled to gather again following our last World Congress in Buenos Aires. Let’s make #IPSA2025 another historic event for IPSA!

The Convention was part of the Victorian Schools Parliamentary Program - run by National Curriculum Services on behalf of the Victorian Department of Education - and included students from Saint Ignatius as well as Clonard College, Kardinia International College, and St Joseph's College.
nathanfioritti.bsky.social
I found students were really engaged in both the topic and the parliamentary procedures they adopted as part of the debate, and I hope they came away from this event with a stronger grasp of the Australian Constitution and political system as a whole.
nathanfioritti.bsky.social
To the frustration of some, I did not offer a straight answer, but rather, focused on key considerations students should account for when approaching this question.

It was my great pleasure to join and deliver a keynote address to students at Saint Ignatius College last week as part of a Local Parliamentary Convention on the Australian Constitution and whether it is fit for purpose or obsolete. Thank you to all involved for having me.

Thanks to our hosts at @deldemucan.bsky.social at the University of Canberra, and the POP Exec for organising.

It was a pleasure to join, reconnect with and meet new members of the @apsa-pop.bsky.social community this week and present papers on political systems and extreme polarisation (with Narelle Miragliotta) and the Greensland phenomenon in Brisbane (with @phoebehayman.bsky.social and Stewart Jackson).

On the same day Larissa Waters - formerly a lawyer with the Environmental Defenders Office - was appointed leader of the Greens, the Crisafulli Government, after pledging pre-election that they'd continue to fund the EDO, has revealed they're cutting it. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-05...
Environmental Defenders Office funding completely cut in Queensland
The office provides legal aid to those dealing with environmental and planning disputes and has received about $500,000 per year over the past five years from the Queensland government.

Larissa Waters is the Greens' new leader. Besides having an apt surname for an ecological party leader, what do we know about her? And what might we expect from her leadership of Australia's largest minor party?

Excellent piece from A/Prof Grant Blashki, noting that heatwaves are Australia’s deadliest natural disaster – surpassing bushfires, floods, etc. As Blashki writes, at the heart of this issue is climate justice, with vulnerable groups disproportionately impacted pursuit.unimelb.edu.au/articles/hea...
Heatwaves and climate change are Australia’s deadliest ‘unnatural’ disaster
With the mercury soaring in much of the country, extreme heat and heatwaves are fast becoming Australia’s most urgent climate-driven health emergency, says University of Melbourne expert

I recognise that this is a really privileged position to be in, and have every intention of using it to drive social change and uplift others. Looking forward to whatever comes next!

This report was tabled with little coverage. Its a routine update on the unfolding climate catastrophe, with some important messages:

-the climate is already changing
-heatwaves & droughts are going to have huge impacts on VIC
-what we do now matters
