More are united around a simple message: RFK Jr should not be HHS Sec. His decisions undermine our public health capacity and put lives and health at risk.

As 6 former Surgeon Generals argue:

"He has rejected science, misled the public and compromised the health of Americans."

Opinion | Six surgeons general: RFK Jr. is a threat to the health of Americans
It was our duty in office to warn of dangers when we found them. We’re doing that again today.

Plague is a high-consequence infectious disease with epidemic potential.

💬 Viewpoint: Eliminating vaccine mandates in Florida threatens public health by increasing disease outbreaks, costs, vaccine hesitancy, and risks to vulnerable populations.

A JAMA viewpoint article titled "Potential Repercussions of Eliminating Mandatory Vaccination in Florida" discusses vaccine objections and mandates. A table lists sixteen infectious diseases controlled/eliminated in the US using vaccines and their impact.

💬 Viewpoint: The resurgence of #measles and erosion of immunization policy, coupled with declining vaccination rates and undermined public health agencies, threaten to return the US to an era of frequent, preventable disease outbreaks.

25% of Drs in US are foreign grads. Many are on an H1B visa. This will hit health systems hard especially rural hospitals and hospitals in underserved areas that sponsor these visas through waiver programs. The old cost was about 5000$ a year.

I have to keep this deliberately vague, but this is a total disaster for academic research.

And imposing it so suddenly is just cruel. I’ve got friends scrambling to get back to the US before midnight tonight. Do you know how hard that is to do on 36 hours of notice?
Trump to impose $100,000 fee per year for H-1B visas, in blow to tech
The Trump administration said on Friday it would ask companies to pay $100,000 per year for H-1B worker visas, prompting some big tech companies to warn visa holders to stay in the U.S. or quickly return.

Immigrants, particularly on H1Bs, are the lifeblood of American innovation. If you wanted to hurt US competitiveness in the next century, I can think of few more effective ways than a move like this

Even when found illegal, the mere intent will have irreparably harmed our future

My ACIP recap: 🧵

1) MMRV combo vaccine no longer recommended for children <4y. That means vaccine will not be covered by insurance, so not an option for patients. The 2 shot MMR and chickenpox vaccines are still available. This removes access. Let’s see which vaccine they will go for next!

In June, an ACIP member said that 250 pediatric flu deaths were no big deal. Maybe today we will find out that a handful of hepatitis B related cancers, transplants, and deaths are also not a big deal to them either. Welcome to the new public health. We are aligned to a manifesto, not science.

There it is: admitting they’re changing vaccine policy to address ‘concerns,’ not because of any scientific evidence. ACIP’s mandate is to follow data, not public opinion. When you sacrifice evidence-based medicine to appease political constituencies, children pay the price.
ACIP member Dr. Robert Malone: “It’s clear that a significant population in United States has significant concerns about vaccine policy and vaccine mandates.”

NO TRUST IN ACIP!

Well, the absolutely incomprehensible vote at the end of the ACIP meeting has left everyone confused. MMRV resolution passed, so it’s off the schedule for younger children and CMS won’t cover it.

Folks, we survived Day 1 of the September #ACIP meeting

On the surface, it may not have seemed *too* terrible:

BUT‼
There were several points made by fAkeCIP members during discussion that have us concerned
We'll go into that more in a bit, but first let us crack open a cold 🍺

After years of complaining about cancel culture, the current administration has taken it to a new and dangerous level by routinely threatening regulatory action against media companies unless they muzzle or fire reporters and commentators it doesn’t like.
Let’s be clear about what happened to Jimmy Kimmel

We have 2 vaccines that prevent cancer, the HBV vaccine that prevents hepatitis B related liver cancer and the HPV vaccine that prevents cervical cancer and other HPV associated cancers.
On Thursday, RFK.JR's ACIP will attack one of these vaccines (HBV) and restrict access to it.
Let that sink in!

SPECIAL REPORT: A large swath of the U.S. currently does not have the basic, ground-level immunity necessary to stop the spread of viruses that had once receded into the past, a six-month NBC News investigation in collaboration with scientists at Stanford University finds.
Data investigation: Childhood vaccination rates are backsliding across the U.S.
A monthslong NBC News data investigation finds that much of the U.S. doesn't have the protection needed to stop the spread of deadly diseases. St. Louis is a window into the problem communities face nationwide.

Centralizing data from diverse reporting systems enables timely, actionable measles surveillance, helping guide public health interventions, improve vaccination efforts, and model outbreak risk more precisely within communities.
