It feels like a bit of a gag saying this today, but January 12th is the day of the year with our lowest average temperature.
Temperatures bottom out for two weeks, from around new year's to today.
After that starts the slow, slow climb towards spring.

as of 4pm - temperatures have hit 10.3 degrees. As mentioned earlier - that breaks the previous record of 9.4 from Jan 12, 1891. #yegwx
as of 3pm - we've hit a high of 10.0 in Edmonton. That's a new record high for Jan 12th (beating the previous record of 9.4 from 1891) #yegwx

Super proud of myself today. I went out this morning to run a steady pace long run. I ended up with just over 10km and a third best time EVER. I didn't realize that until I got home. Slow and steady is starting to pay off!

Great snowshoeing today! Students spotted hare tracks (their back leg tracks looked the same as our snowshoe tracks!) crossed by a canine set. Based on the straight line, small size, and lack of human prints, we think coyote or fox. What do you think?

Happy new year!
It's also the first of the month which means the #YEG #TrailSisters trail run was a "onesies" run. It was snowy, the trails were covered, and we weren't fast - but we were warm!

The Earth has finished its tilt away from the sun.
Even though it’s been cold, today is the official start of winter. The good news? The light returns a little more each day. Here’s to longer days and the coming spring! ☀️🌱

A MAJOR snowstorm hits Alberta Wednesday (including the Edmonton area). Heavy snow, gusty wind (near-blizzard conditions for some areas) and cold. Here's a timeline on all that & a closer look at the impacts of the storm system - Tue WxBlast video: www.ctvnews.ca/edmonton/vid... #yegwx

Big goals for next year mean braving the cold! Trading the dying treadmill for uneven snow and fresh air.
Winter rules: Ignore pace, focus on time on feet. So good to see the sun!

Found my love for trail running with the 5 Peaks Trail Running Series! ⛰️ Signed up for all 5 races in 2024 knowing no one, and found my community. I'm not fast, but I crushed my PB on all 5 races this past season! Thrilled to announce I'm a 5 Peaks Ambassador for 2026!

It took awhile but I finally finished the blog post about my FIRST solo mountain backpacking trip from July 2024. Give it a read! Has anyone else done Egypt Lake in Banff National Park? An absolutely beautiful area!

Haven't done this in a LONG time! The truck is getting her winter tires put on so I had some time to myself. Went for a beautiful walk first. Now I'm working on some blog posts I'm VERY behind on in Starbucks.
What a lovely morning.

Can't run quite yet - sprained ankle is not 100% healed. But I joined the Edmonton Trail Sisters tonight and walked with these two lovely ladies. Great conversation, beautiful evening, and the ankle held up ok!

Watching Lost Cities with Albert Lin. Absolutely inspiring explorer!
Makes me wonder about GIS and LiDAR technology. How can these techs help our ever changing landscape? How can I learn more? Is this a curiosity that I should find out more about?
So many questions. Great job National Geographic!

Happy Thanksgiving!
I'm grateful for the quiet moments in nature that remind me to breathe, slow down, and stay grounded. The changing leaves, crisp air, and stillness of the outdoors are gentle reminders that tranquility lives in the little things. Wishing you warmth and a little calm today.
