Ah missed the “kmh”. That’s about 25mph, much more reasonable. 40mph is pretty common in the states however :(

Besides the point, but wow a 40mph speed limit in what appears to be a residential area.

It’s, at best, completely orthogonal to pedestrian safety
December 14, 2025 at 6:51 PM
Got it. Thanks for clarifying and engaging constructively. The question of how to reduce fatalities, by reducing driving and/or increasing safety (in urban settings) is interesting, considering US VMT has reached an all time high of ~3.2 trillion miles.
December 14, 2025 at 6:50 PM
I agree with your point that more driving leads to more fatalities, but this still hides the fact that American drivers are in fact getting more dangerous irrespective of VMT. This is obvious by looking at pedestrian fatalities as a % of all traffic fatalities, reaching a 30 year high of 18%

Try replacing “cars” with “guns” and the issue with this portrayal will be clear: “Our per-bullet fatality rate is low, we just fire more bullets”.

That is, the per mile/km fatality rate doesn’t quantify risk to the average citizen. Thus the per-capita rate is what is important.

We need to give more salience to political science and less to tech bro boosterism

Will it “solve” drunk driving?
Will it “solve” nimbyism?
Will it “solve” fascism?
December 13, 2025 at 7:49 PM
This is amazing.

Maybe a better definition is a model that no longer requires training and can improve at any arbitrary task in perpetuity, for some definition of “improve”.
December 10, 2025 at 6:32 PM
I’ve heard that too but it’s hard to enumerate “every task” and hard to define “better”. Will it do calculus better than me? Certainly. Will it compose a novel symphony “better” than Beethovens 5th? Maybe, but subjective at best.

Is there even a definitive set of criteria to define when we have “achieved AGI”, to the extent that we can evaluate against the inevitable claims of boosters?
December 10, 2025 at 6:05 PM
I think Dario Amodei, ironically, had the best answer to the question of whether AGI is coming: “I don’t know what AGI is”

That values the whole generative AI market at just under $16 billion in 2025.

Those 11 US AI titans had a market capitalization in October 2022 of $8.24 trillion, suggesting that they accrued $15.9 trillion in 3 years... 1000 years of their 2025 revenue.

You can draw a straight line from Prius to Cybertruck in the Berkeley performative environmentalism theater groups

Hopkins neighbors had a chance to get ahead of these massive costs had they allowed the bike lane, since the project was set to be contracted out just prior to the law going into effect. Now the road will return back to the earth as god intended.

And wait until they find out about new state mandated storm water permeability requirements, which increases costs to $750,000 per *acre* of road reconstructed.

Was latter you just distracted by former you’s concerns over drivers?

Ok now I’m curious. Is this like a CB outlet warehouse?

Love the bar/lounge area, colocated with the dining area. What couch is that, if I may ask?

Yes it looks like it defies the laws of physics. But trees have a very low center of gravity, and as long as the lower trunk is secured it is stable. You can sort of see in the pic that the trunk is wedged below a cross bar behind my seat and then bungeed down. A box bike would’ve been better tho!
