I’m fairly optimistic about AI providing more upside than downside to society. But the “solve AGI, and we will solve everything else” talking point is not convincing. Since “everything else” is mostly politically constrained not technologically constrained.

That values the whole generative AI market at just under $16 billion in 2025.

Those 11 US AI titans had a market capitalization in October 2022 of $8.24 trillion, suggesting that they accrued $15.9 trillion in 3 years... 1000 years of their 2025 revenue.

“Push some code real quick” is what a startup making the next AI powered blender would do
An incident as related by a student:

I called Waymo support because the car was on the Muni tracks after getting clipped after trying to outrun a train and wouldn't move. I asked if there was anything I could do to move the car. They said no but would "push some code real quick".

Another day, another billionaire, maga, sacred-native-american-grounds-destroying, oil tycoon stops a bike lane, 5 years in the making.
Denver scaled back a street safety project after pushback from the family of Colorado's wealthiest man.

While the city told the public that construction was the hold up, @spencersoicher.bsky.social obtained internal city emails showing the issue was "high level" community concerns.

This goes right to every issue with AI right now.

You basically have 2 sides: the techbros hyping it and doomers only worried about the singularity

No one is dealing with the real existing problems right now, which for AVs is that there are Zero mechanisms holding companies accountable for safety.

New post: a week of hectic back and forth with fire officials and city council over Berkeley street festivals brings out into the open a conflict in city halls across USA. Fire depts opposition to traffic calming and safety measures. Is there a solution?

Street safety advocates are butting heads with fire officials. Swift fire response does not have to come at the cost of lives on the roadway.

The utter irony of seeing this sign in the yard of a single family home a half block from the beach in Pacific Beach, San Diego. The building in question would be located 1.5 miles away. And no, aesthetics has nothing to do with this stupid NIMBY mindset.

Damn. Not beating those “just another car” allegations
Waymo privatized another public street:

Chanel approaching 4th, San Francisco

Possibly queued for a Billie Eilish show at Chase Center ~half mile away.

The light rail train on 4th seen passing in front of this roboherd has more passenger capacity than all of them combined.

Wanna stick it to Trump and live up to the Paris Accords, California? Stop driving so much *and* tell your city council's to build bus and bike lanes instead of throwing away money on car infrastructure.

stancil vs urbanists 🥱

urbanists vs the AV urbanists 🍿
Almost half the Waymos on California streets are driving around empty. They're either waiting for the next customer or en route for a pickup.

If robotaxis scale, anything close to that level of deadheading would create crushing gridlock.

hi motorists. So, when you use your horn to get a cyclist's attention, you're using a device designed to make a sound loud enough to penetrate layers of metal & glass. How'd you like an air horn in your ear while you're concentrating on something that could get you hurt or killed if you flinched?

I coauthored an opinion in Berkeleyside today, focusing on how the 26foot street clearance the Fire Department requires is being interpreted in ways that harm the city.

Opinion: Berkeley should rethink rule requiring 26-foot clearance for fire trucks on city streets
Selective enforcement of an optional state fire code rule has harmed street fairs and farmers markets. If applied uniformly, many streets would lose half their parking. A policy better tailored to Ber...

When you leave in a car you’re thinking “what’s the fastest way to get there?”

When I leave on my bike I’m thinking “what’s the safest way to get there?”

We are not the same

our crossing guards do mission impossible and I am so thankful for all of them, but JFC the fact that we need "Guards" to simply ensure drivers don't run over school children?
This is what is so twisted about our auto obsessed culture that we don't even see how we've completely normalized this.

I think Rose from Live Oak to Hopkins might be better. It serves Live Oak on one end and Cedar-Rose Park on the other, plus four schools (Madeleine, King, Crowden and Acty). It’s a major youth corridor and intersects Milvia, California and Ohlone bike paths. It’s also now a speedway and car sewer.

Every city should have a dedicated Speed Hump/Cushion program, as distinct from any general traffic calming initiatives.
