We can be certain that we face hard dictatorship when we consider that in *1971*, on (now defunded) PBS, the Rev. Jesse Jackson can affirm the nobility of children on Sesame Street, and that today, in 2026, the FCC blocks a CBS interview with a white, Christian, Democratic candidate for US Senate.

The prolific, pioneering filmmaker made dozens of documentaries and chronicled the inner workings of institutions. His 1967 film, Titicut Follies, revealed appalling conditions at a prison facility.

1/ The US is losing its vaccine infrastructure. Before the US became a military power, we had to conquer infectious disease. That was key. When disease was controlled, we decoupled it from the military. That let us forget that infectious diseases threaten national security. We're about to learn why.

Very funny Bill McKibben reply to a critical letter in NYRB:

"I’m grateful to Mark Roller for producing an almost pitch-perfect summary of the anti-renewable talking points that have been in circulation for decades. These would have been wrong in, say, 2016, but in 2026 they are just silly."

The last wild European bison was shot in 1927. At the time there were fewer than 60 such bison alive in zoos & private parks. Now, the great, shaggy beasts are once again roaming the Carpathian Mountains.

And they're helping bring wild lands back to life.

Good news story! No pay wall.
