Confirming foot traffic. I'm in the vicinity of 30th/University at some point most weekends, and sidewalks are always full. There are more people walking than driving on a Saturday afternoon.

University Ave should be bike/bus only from Utah St to Iowa St IMO.
San Diego installed bike lanes on a busy commercial street in North Park in 2021. Ridership jumped 67% the next year.

Now, 4 years later, bike and scooter trips on 30th Street have hit another record high. Foot traffic and business activity is also booming. www.kpbs.org/news/quality...

Bike and scooter trips on 30th Street have jumped 15% since the installation of protected bike lanes in 2021. Foot traffic and business activity also appear to be thriving.

Children shouldn't have to be driven to parks and parks shouldn't be filled with cars because that takes away from green space. Even without parking fees, arriving in Balboa Park in a car is a choice and the most expensive one. There are better and cheaper options. Cars are bad for kids' health.
Opinion: Why Balboa Park parking fees are bad for local kids’ health

So has anyone written a good urbanist take on "protests where people stand next to a busy road or intersection" vs "protests where people occupy a large plaza"?

It seems to say something about different kinds of places

Wow. Why is it always that the worst people are also the ones so adamantly opposed to fighting... bike lanes of all things?

Could there be a connection? ...Nah.

Awesome !

Also, a reminder that this is an undercount, because there are often cars blocking the counter.

Drivers must be held accountable for things like getting so angry at a kind crossing guard (on this case one I've met before and give bike bus stickers to) that they get out of their vehicle and brandish a knife. This happened in Edwardsville right in a vibrant, safe neighborhood.

It works. And people walking and cycling and taking transit deserve safety

Bicycles were the original liberation technology before they were rebranded as "toys for children" to justify forcing everyone into a car.

Cities designed around people nurture well-being, making mobility safer, cheaper, more accessible, and supportive of physical and mental health.

How did road safety become ideological? Doesn’t everyone want to be able to walk on the sidewalk and cross the streets? Ride their bike to the beach and the store?
Boggles the mind.

*the redesign reduces the total parking! Costing at least $4M, this design hasn’t even been installed for a year, hasn’t been evaluated, and there is no justification for removing it. Doing so will reduce the number of people biking, make the road more dangerous, and it’s just incredibly petty.

Berkeley also designs "safe streets" with maintaining car speed as a priority, and as a result, spends millions making streets no safer than they were before.
San Mateo is putting out a $6.5 million project to bid and it is just maddening how bad some of these planned intersections are for pedestrians. One well-designed example and two poorly designed ones for reference.
